Approx. 30.
You should learn a few aayaat (verses) at a time. Repeat each verse about 10 times. Then, after 5 verses, you could try reading the 5 verses in sequence 10 times, while looking into the quraan. Thereafter, see if you can repeat the 5 verses without looking into the Quraan.
Try memorizing a few aayaat (verses) every day.
Also, if you could listen to a recorded recital of a haafiz, of the chapter you are memorizing, it should help you.
Eating almonds helps to improve memory.
Always ask Allah for help.

It is good to memorize the Surahs , because the Quran is light .
but think about it's meaning and to see what exactly it says and it wants is better than memorizing it.
for the ones whom arabic is not theire main language , it is hard to memorize it .

I only know 2 by heart in Arabic. Allah forgive me it is out of laziness. I now live in an Arabic speaking country and have such and opportunity and have not learned one Surrah in my 6 month here. It is tough but we should all try harder. I need to kick myself in the behind and start doing better.

I am free thinker but I thought would like to share my view of this.
This tradition is old because people were afraid the Koran would be destroyed by the enemy during war or prosecution so the revelation would be lost. Today the above is not valid and impossible to happen specially in the United State where you Live. It is hard even for Arabic speaking.
