The best languages are English, Spanish and German. I would substitute Latin for Spanish, so you can understand pretty much any romance language. (Romanian, Italian, Portuguese, French, Spanish, etc.) And German is just plain awesome. No matter what you say, it seems like you're cussing someone out. English is the best language in the world. No question. It may be the hardest, but that just makes you happier when you master it ;)

The easiest third language to learn would be one in the same language family as the other two (ex: French, Spanish, Italian). However, the most beneficially third language to learn would probably be either Arabic, Chinese, or Spanish, depending on your social/educational/professional context.

I speak English and Spanish. So it's easy for me to understand Italian. I also get a few words from French and Portugues. So for my 3rd language, I am planning on learning Japanese, also since I plan on going there in may. Apart from that, I also notice that besides Japanese, Mandarin is another language that is also useful for job porpuse. I also would like to learn Persian, since a 3rd of my friends are Persian, and would like to be able to speak to them in their own language and understand their music.

But getting back to the original question, I would say English, Spanish (That way, you can do business in almost all of the Americas), and then Japanese.

For anyone under 25, I would heartily recommend Mandarin. China is fast becoming a major economic player. Native English speakers that are proficient communicators (verbal and written) in Mandarin will be in great demand within a very short time.

English, Japanese (we do most of our business there) and Spanish (no longer a minority in this country and many languages are derived from it). For example I know Spanish fluently, but am able to understand Italian and Portuguese.

The first two are obvious. But you may not of thought of ASL, it is the 4th largest growing language with its own rule-governed communication system with ASL structure.

It is completely dependent on your particular circumstances. That being said, you probably can't go wrong with English, Spanish, and Chinese. I believe they are the three most commonly spoken languages.
