The mistaken concept of "soul sleep" selectively ignores other scriptural passages, including the specific teachings of Jesus, that God is the God of the living, not the dead, and that the souls of those who have "fallen asleep" are alive, either in heaven, hell, or as Catholics understand, in Purgatory.
One of the best proofs of this is Christ's words to Dismas, the good thief, who was beside him at the cross:
Luke 23:43 And Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee: This day thou shalt be with me in paradise.
Jesus' words would have been rather empty as well as deceptive, if paradise referred simply to a hole in the earth, where body and soul would rest until the day of judgment.
The parable of Lazarus and the rich man also reinforces the idea that the souls of the dead are alive. Not merely buried in oblivion.
This is why the Church has always essentially taught:
2Co 5:6 Therefore having always confidence, knowing that while we are in the body we are absent from the Lord.
2Co 5:7 (For we walk by faith and not by sight.)
2Co 5:8 But we are confident and have a good will to be absent rather from the body and to be present with the Lord.

A Closer Look at Some
Myths About Death
Myth 1: Death is the natural end of life.
God created humans, not with death as the natural outcome, but with the prospect of living on indefinitely.
Myth 2: God takes people in death to be with him.
Is the Creator really so cruel that he would callously inflict death on us, knowing that this breaks our hearts? No, not the God of the Bible. False religion has left many confused as to the whereabouts and condition of the dead. Heaven, hell, purgatory, Limbo—these and various other destinations range from being incomprehensible to being downright terrifying. The Bible, on the other hand, tells us that the dead are unconscious; they are in a condition best compared to sleep.
Myth 3: God takes little children to become angels.
Why would God snatch a child to get another angel—as if God needed a child more than the child's parents did? If it were true that God takes children, would that not make him an unloving, selfish Creator? So why do children die?Time and unforeseen occurrence befall them all."
Myth 4: Some people are tormented after death.
Many religions teach that the wicked will go to a fiery hell and be tormented forever. Only God can reveal what happens after people die, and he has done so in his written Word, the Bible. This is what the Bible says: "As the [beast] dies, so the [man] dies; and they all have but one spirit . . . All are going to one place. They have all come to be from the dust, and they are all returning to the dust." (Ecclesiastes 3:19, 20)
Myth 5: Death means the permanent end of our existence.
Christ's own words give us this assurance: "The hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear [Jesus'] voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment."—John 5:28, 29.

Paul said to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. If you're a Christian, your last breath here will be your first breath in Heaven.

Did Christ go directly to Heaven when he died? Do you think you are better than him and deserve to go directly, or do you think that you need to be resurrected, just as Christ was, before you ascend to Heaven? Christ could do nothing, but lie in the grave, until his resurrection.
