I've heard purchasing tickets at certain times of the month can make a difference - I'm looking for some insider information on this.

No... sales are pretty much random, save the seasonal cycles. E.g., there was a sale to Seattle from LA for the rest of this year... too bad this isn't the best time to go.

Generally, the best chance of getting good fares is to plan ahead, and be willing to fly Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday.

Other than that, there's no discernable pattern to the purchase itself. Travel dates are more important.

I used to work at a travel agency (Australia). I would suggest the following:
1. Travel off-season
2. Book online directly with the airline (cut out the costs of the middleman)
3. Become a frequent flyer member - the points all add up.
4. Compare all airlines: definatly don't just consider airlines that are owned and ran within you're home country (for example asian airlines and eastern european airlines tend to be cheaper)
5. Always buy a return ticket
6. If you're travelling a fair portion of the world then consider an 'around the world ticket'

Some tricks I have learned are
1: try to fly between Monday - Thursday
tickets tend to be cheaper
2: book online at least 3 weeks in advance
3: get the earliest flight possible

Try to book your ticket 3 months before.
