I most assuredly do. Honestly, I think Elton John is crazy, for the most part, but I totally believe that organized religion is a very bad thing that has led to many horrible events in our earth's history.
Will it rid the world of evil? Not by a long shot... but it would help tremendously.
I'm not advocating an elimination of god belief... just organized religion. It's like ridding the schools of prayer... you can still pray all you want... to yourself. Just not outloud and forcing others to participating with you.
Worship on your own, just don't force everyone else to join you and don't belittle those who don't want to join you.

I don't think this will ever happen & no matter how you look at this you'd have civil unrest...so I'm not certain that banning anything is the answer.
Personally I'd like Sir Elton to join Sir Paul on the ice with a few angry seals.

banning it would just drive it underground. far to many justify their actions based on religious ignorance than bigotry. not understanding what the purpose of religion is, as well as a too literal interpretation defeats its function within a social structure. it would be easier to blind everyone en mass, than to change religious bigotry and remove such from society. if someone could interpret it as it was meant to be, a code of conduct, he could teach it to others, and ,perhaps, change the role religion plays within society. unfortunately, he would suffer too much intransigence to make it feasible any time soon unless something drastic occurs which will force changes to society as a whole.

Tuff question. Shouldn't be, but seeing the responses from religious folk here makes me want to. They seem almost universally stupid and cruel.
As a practical matter though if you ban that then you can just go and ban ANYTHING you don't like, some of which I might like. The thing I myself hate about religious people is that they all want to force their beliefs on others and doing the same in kind can't help in the long run. Best to just mock them.

No, I do not support homosexuals, or Republicans....and rarely do I support Democrats. Basically, I only support the righteous. That also means I don't go to church as there is no more an evil place than a palace of hypocrites.
Basically, I have a few close friends and everyone else can kiss my @$$.

he makes a good point but misses the mark, he aims at religion instead of the zealots who want to be better than everyone else. they need someone for their followers to be angry with to justify and exalt themselves. sometimes the little religious group shouts the loudest to try and overpower the voice of the mainstream. they want to be equal to everyone else. the problem is, they want to be 'more equal' than everyone else. the mainstream of most religions would preach tolerance, not burning at the stake or doing a hitler with the gay population like some churches are trying to get their followers to do. it is sad to think of what extremes some people have to go to in order to feel superior to others, a leader.

Of course not - banning things just makes them more popular. Look at prohibition. It will just serve to make religion stronger.
We just have to stop basing our gov't around it. Stop legislating religoius-based morallity. Let people believe what they want, but don't let them use those belief, perhaps misguided, to hurt other people.

Nothing has caused more pain, suffering, abuse and death, and has impeded progress more then religion. The world would be a much, much better place without it. Even though I am a flaming atheist, I would never support banning religion.
