think about it - those aren't painkillers - you are giving the kid a baby shot so he''ll sleep - safe or not I don't think its wise to expose children to alcohol at such an early age

My mother used to do this too, because then they didn't have those ice things that the kids could chew on, they didn't have the teething products they do today.
Instead of liquor, go to the store. But if you can't and you are in a pinch, whiskey is what they used to use and only a little on the finger and rub on the gums..I don't recommend this, but back in the day that was all they had...kind of like a bullet and a shot - the shot to help numb the body and the bullet to bite on while they did surgery. Things have sure come a long way haven't they.
Talk with your doctor also about what he recommends, I still say ice and teething products.

I see nothing wrong with the dipped Q tip of whatever you might have available esp when stores are closed and you run out of orajel. My grandmother used tequila or whatever was avail at the time. Also try the teething tablets (they're sweet) if the orajel is getting a yucky face or resistance to open up. also boil whole cloves all u want is to get them soft and the juices from them so use little water just enough to cover. dip a washcloth in the pot or put in a cup then pour juices over it let it soak up into the rag then squeeze out let baby bite on that washcloth. beats Alcoholic beverages and is probably already in your kitchen cabinet.

Actually, using something like brandy or a dark liquor and rubbing a little on their gums does numb the area and relieve the pain. Alcohol has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries for just that effect. It not only numbs the area but kills germs. And the tiny bit that you need to rub on a child's gums is not enough to harm them.

People on here are idiots.

If you're mom was puttin' a WHOLE SHOT in your bottle, why, you must have been the most coolest baby to go out and get drunk with.

No, but seriously...

The alcohol content in the liquor gives the baby a numbing sensation... it does the same for grown-ups with issues.
Personally, I would only resort to using liquor if the baby was in intense pain & crying uncontrollably and I didn't have Orajel. But if I have to, I'd go for the strongest stuff I've got.

Whiskey, Vodka, Brandy: serve over ice in a bottle w/ a paper umbrella coming out of the nipple.

Cheers to you, Buddy

No. It is not safe, nor is it good for your baby. They make teething gel that is much more affective and does not upset your child's tummy, nor does it make your baby's breath smell like alcohol. They used this method years ago before they made teething gel. Another great thing that feels wonderful on your baby's sore little gums is a frozen washcloth. Put a wet washcloth in the freezer and when it is frozen give it to your baby to suck on. Don't ever leave her/him unattended as he/she may choke on the cloth, but as long as you are watching it will feel very good on their gums, and they like the sucking action too. My child's pediatrician recommended this tip, between the gel, the washcloth and a little tylenol for the fevers if needed, you two will survive this stage.

a whole shot? holy crap. that's a lot. i would say a few drops, and i would say water it down fist as well. think of it this way, mutiply the amont of liquor by 15x and that's about the feffect it would have on the baby. see, 15 shots is a lot. 15 drops is not much. but wtering it down and then rubbing on the gums would help a lot.

whatever i got my hands on i just took my finger and rub the top though i did not use alot just until the tip on my finger was wet then i rub his gums with my finger. I do use oragel but i used the liqure when i had none. NOT a whole bottle just a little bit its good just enough to wet the tip of your finger does the trick.

Looks like you got your good parenting skills from your mother. NOT. No wonder you turned out to cheat, abuse your children, and live a VERY unhappy life. Good for you!

Don't freaking use liquor at all. You'll end up killing your poor baby- are u trying to kill the ugly duckling one? Sick freak!

A shot in the bottle is too much. I have taken a drop or two of Jim Beam and rubbed it on their gums. Oragel is what you are supposed to use.
