The Game of the Generals is who is on top but the top had already changed. Thus, they are in a precarious position now because the Democrats are now in control of the military positioning according to promotions, movements and budget.

Department of the Army Select (DA Select for those who know) is a process done through Congress. Of course, Bush, Rumsfeld, and Harvey will put in his preferred choices for consideration. This is not an "*** kissing" process, and the process is based on records and experience in given fields.
The Generals will only serve for a 2 to 3 years in a given area as a general rule. Most officer positions work that way. As mentioned above, these higher ranking Generals are required to have experience in given areas in order to over see certain missions. They simply can not walk in from anywhere to fill any position. By the time an officer makes 0-5, it's expected they have a thesis in place to forge the direction and purpose of their career.
The military service is only concerned with achieving the goals set forth, not politics. The goals are set by the civilian authorities and the military conducts operations that ensures the goals are achieved. That's the name of the game.
The military was concerned about the democrat take over in congress. Not because 'they are Democrats,' but the fear of gridlock over the process of the war and how lives will be lost if the president and congress can not see eye to eye on funding and support of the operations to achieve the goals. This is not a political football to be used. This isn't a game.
Please consider this before making the military a political joke.

By the time someone makes general, they most likely have a cushy private sector retirement job lined up already, so it really makes no material difference to the top brass. I think the coalition forces will be more of a rapid reaction force and act as the hammer when Iraqi forces get in over their heads, rather than acting independently from here on in. I imagine there will be coalition forces in Iraq indefinitely, but if the Democrats play their cards right and GWB agrees, they can perhaps have troops from Jordan, Saudi Arabia, etc. help out in Iraq.
