Does anyone know how long you are supposed to take an expectorant? Is it when the cough gets to a certain sound (dry, not productive) or just when you stop coughing?

the directions on the bottle should tell you.

i would think until you're comfortable enought to stop using it...that is if you feel you're okay when dry/not productive then stop taking it.

if you feel that the cough is lasting longer than it should you should probably go to the doctor to see why the cough is lingering.

Latest talk on TV and radio is that expectorants don't work. I disagree, however, because it works for me. I'd talk to my doctor or a pharmacist about the timing issue. It may not be a good idea to take an expectorant for more than a certain time period. Also, if the expectorant is mixed with other medication, those other medications might not be the best thing to be taking for as long as you have a cough.
