Okay, most of you who have panic attacks probably know where i'm coming from... and know that the reason why you have them most of the time is the fear of fear. You are afraid it will happen, so the apprehension brings them on... Basically.. i'm afraid almost all of the time... I just wanted to know if anybody else out there has trouble sleeping at night because of it... It's really hard for me to sleep because I am so afraid of having an attack. Any advice on what I can do to calm my mind? or how to fall asleep easier? thanks... oh and p.s. I am on medicines and seeing a psychologist... they're thinking about switchings meds... I just mean things that I can do on my own to calm down...

I would suggest taking up meditation for the day time. As for going to sleep at night, visualization works very well once you have the hang of it, you can actually use it to trigger sleep, much like an on/off switch. It's like programming your brain to have a specific response to a particular visualization.

Oh my gosh, that was me a very long time ago. I really feel for you. I dont know about you but after a while I could feel them start to happen and I would immediately start taking deep breaths and try to talk myself out of it. Just remember that you will not die even if that is how you feel. You will be ok. Just concentrate on your breathing and keep saying everything is ok. Know you are not alone in feeling this. However, if I were you I would get on some other med's there are ones that really work. There is hope you will get past this. Good luck.

You have my sympathy. I remember my first panic attack about the age of 5. Of course I didnt know what it was. As I got older I would have about 10 to 20 a day. I learned to talk myself out of them. One thing that helped me was deep breathing. I was also put on Zoloft which made a tremendous difference. Along with the deep breathing it would help me to think of one thing and concentrate on that, so I would say the Lords Prayer to myself until the attack stopped.

I also have a panic disorder. I took an anxiety management course at the local hospital that helps me a lot. For instance>> you have had panic attacks before right? And you got through them right? So the next time you feel one coming on think positive, and it helps to get distracted.

Just remember at night if you are at home and in bed, there is no better, comforting place to be. On the rare occasion when I have one at home ( usually mine are out in public) i pat myself on the leg and reassure myself everything is OK.It is a constant pat like you're burping a baby. I know that sounds just crazy, but anxiety attacks are just that too - crazy and irrational, but they are very real. Also you may need to change your meds. I just quit taking Zoloft because it wasn't working and switched to Buspar, which is in a different catagoryof drugs.
Good luck!

i have the same problem. my therapist taught me breathing exercises which do help. ya know, the in through your nose, out through your mouth thing. they dont ALWAYS work, so i try to distract my mind by doing something that really takes all of my concentration, like counting backwards from 100 by like 7 or something. while doing that i do my breathing also and it helps. have they not given you anything to help you sleep? i'm on ativan and on trezadone (sp?) to help me sleep. but i know exactly how you feel, i struggle with anxiety everyday. sometimes i cant leave my house, BUT seeing a therapist and a shrink has helped, it just takes alot of time..if you ever need someone to talk to feel free to email me..atreyu17244@yahoo.com..
