and now he has loose, hangy skin. Like the kind people sometimes get!? He is still a very long and big boned tom cat(age 4yrs). My question is..will the skin tighten back up or always be like that?

ill admit to the mistake of having an automatic dry feeder at first, but...his first 2 years i lived with aunt and i didnt know that even though I was feeding him a can of fancy feast every other day...she was feeding him one every day, plus a bite of whatever she was eating, he i got married and my mother in law lives here and she was feeding him lots of people food too, he was just on a very unhealthy diet and didnt get much excersise. He has been to 2 vets, and I have laid down the law to anyone staying in our home "Dont feed the cat anything". I am the only one feeding him and he is on a strict diet and we make sure he gets plenty of exsercise, his fave. toy is our laser light pen to chase after.

It is funny that you mention this because I had two female cats several years ago decide that they wanted to go on a diet. . . It was really odd. They were both overweight and all of a sudden they both started losing weight (one more than the other). I never fed them differently in any way. I was constantly taking them to various vets because I was worried that something was wrong. I even had the food tested in a lab! They never found anything wrong. Maybe they got a hold of a Kitty Cosmo magazine or something!! Anyway, to make a long story short, they lost a lot of weight and their skin never tightened back up. It just wobbled from side to side when they walked. Then again, they were older. . . about 10 I think. I guess they benefited from the diet b/c they lived until they were 16 & 18, respectively.

Looks like some of your answerer's didn't see that it was the VET who put him on the diet. All the same, I can't help but wonder--why in the first place, but more important--that's over half his normal weight. If your cat was overweight, surely this is going too far. When did the vet last see him? If the vet doesn't think it's a problem, I'd get a second opinion. I wouldn't worry nearly so much about his loose skin as this tremendous loss of weight! I'd need to check back on more of your details, but also wonder if you've seen any other changes in him, behaviour, so on, as well.
I can't imagine a four year old cat being overweight in the first place; since cats do NOT over eat, unless he was a couch potato, how could he be overweight? This is weird. Check him out...

Talk to your vet. That's a massive amount of weight to lose and if you haven't had the cat under the care of a vet, it could be very dangerous for him.
The vet can tell you what may or may not happen with the skin and with his health.
Good luck and I hope you find the answers. : )

My stepdad has a 5 year old maine coon cat that was about 20 lbs, and she lost only 5. This was about a year ago, and she's still pretty saggy looking. Your cat might be more elastic-y than his, but I would assume that he's always going to have pretty loose skin.

To be quite honest - if your cat was above and beyond fat at 23 lbs. perhaps, that means now he's only 7 lbs which is the size of a 6 mo. old or so. Are ya sure he's not dead?

Did you put it on a diet?
It will be pulled back to normal. Just give it time. Should be perfect again in 3-6 months if your cat stops losing weight.

what made your cat lose so much weight so fast? Most cats don't weigh more than 20 lbs....you might call and ask your vet.

cats are generally 10-15 pounds. it seems impossible to have a cat that lost 15-16 pounds.

Please take your cat to the vet asap. That much weight loss is likely serious. Your cat may have feline leukemia or some other serious problem
