I did not put the question mark after the period, Yahoo automatically does that.
Secondly, if it is possesion, then computers..should have been computers' but every time I use that, somebody becomes upset.

If this is an opinion based question, then my answer is yes, and no. Yes in that computers make people lazy (by using spell check, abbreviations, etc.), and no in that people are free to choose to self-edit their own material (I did not spell check this, so I hope it meets with grammatical correctness guidelines). I do not believe that most people who own computers still know how to write a gramatically correct sentence or paragraph.

Before I answer this question, I'd like to point out that you made three mistakes: you put a period and a space between "programs" and the question mark; you also put a comma after the "etc" in the original question. And as another lady pointed out, it is actually "computer's" since it's possesive.

I've asked this question before and I always remember not to make mistakes on it.

However, to answer your question, I believe the computer has done nothing of the sort. This Chat Room era has created an entirely new way of communication. It's a different kind of written slang. I believe as long as the message is understood, the spelling and grammar are not important. If we were being graded on how we wrote, however, it'd be a different story.

It's basically the same reason why people don't speak the same way in a classroom as they do with their pals.

I think it's been a while since schools made these things a priority, computers or not... so in that case, it's good they have the computer spell check and grammar check because that's the only help they're going to get, even though the results are wacky sometimes.

As a teacher, I don't think that computers are the sole blame for poor spelling and grammar skills. They do make it easier for people to not critically think about what they are writing, though.

Honestly, I think the priorities in education are largely to blame. Grammar and spelling have fallen to the wayside due to testing that really doesn't focus on the basics that children should know.

The computer do the spelling and grammer.
Write a letter by hand and look at the difference. People cannot spell anymore or write their own essays.

I think the problem of poor writing skills has more to do with the quality of education in this country than computers.

yes. and nobody can't do anything about it... and everybody blames it on the "need to write fast... no time for spell check". ow, yeah... it's affected even handwriting... which is kinda sad...
