If you don't want your family to know that you are stopping your meds, it means that you've done this before with disastrous results. I urge you to cooperate with your family and your doctor.

Most people don't want to take meds, especially psych meds. I worked as a R.N. on a psych unit for over 20 yrs. and I saw at least 100 people there who had to be admitted because they stopped taking their meds.

One of the problems with some illnesses is they affect a person's judgment. When that is the case, the person has to rely on the judgment of their doctor and the family members that love them.

I had to stop working because I became physically disabled and developed chronic depression because of that. I have to take 2 antidepressants and I could not function if I stopped them.

Please discuss your desire to stop taking your meds with your doctor.

If you're taking anti-depressants then by all means DO NOT stop taking them cold turkey. You will go through the most horrible withdrawal symptoms. I was on Zoloft for 5 months and when I suddenly stopped taking them I had brain zaps, extreme headaches, nausea, and just an all together crappy feeling. This all lasted for about two weeks. The symptoms last even longer if you've been on them for a while. I knew better and I still did it. After that, I decided not to take any medicine for my panic attacks. Again, I'm not sure what kind of medicine you're talking about but if it is anti-depressants tell your doctor you want to quit and they'll show you how to tamper off slowly.

You need to be supervised to get off your medication because you can have problems doing it too fast. Tell your doctor that you want to get off. If he says no, then ask for a reason. You might need to talk to a counselor to make sure everything stays ok with your depression. There are other things that can help depression besides medicine. I wish you the very best!

It's not a good idea to go off any of your meds without asking your doctor first. I'm bipolar and I went off my meds and I ended up in a state mental hospital for a month. So if I were you I would consult with my doctor first.

I had to hide the fact I was on xanax for a long time and my body got physically dependent and if I tried to stop I would get sick. I went to accupuncture and got the help I needed. I detoxed with no side effects, it took about 10 visits or so and I had to eat some chinese herbs as well. this helped me so much because no one knew why I went, you can go to accupuncture for several reasons and I feel awesome. Im so happy, I suggest you try this. It is effective and life changing. Good luck and don't put it off any longer!!

What are the meds for? Maybe you should talk to your doctor before stopping any meds you have been on for this long. It could be dangerous to stop taking them.
