I was wondering...I have 2 male cats the same age. When I put food down, the "nice" kitty will usually sit back and wait til the other is done eating until he moves in for his. (They each have a bowl) and I also noticed that the "grouchier" cat seems to bath the other all the time. It's almost like he is the boss. I know it sounds funny but I did see a thing on T.V. that sometimes 1 cat will resume the job of being the "Boss" is that at all true?

For the most part, yes, there is a "boss" kitty. It works with females too. One cat will be more dominant than the other. Sometimes the roles switch, but it will eventually switch back again so one of them is always in charge. I hope they're fixed or you could have real trouble on your hands.

My older cat is DEFINITELY the boss. If her daughter does something wrong, Tabby will punish her (she grabs Phoebe's head and kicks with her hind feet) to show who's the boss.

Mine will also clean each other. First Tabby will clean Phoebe, and if Phoebe doesn't return the favor, she gets hissed at and kitty-slapped, then Tabby runs away. They get along most of the time, with just a few spats.

Phoebe will usually wait for Tabby to finish drinking from our cat fountain. But they eat at the same time (different bowls as well). Your "nice" kitty could just be showing respect to the "grouchier" one. How far apart are your kitty bowls? Is there a way you could separate them more? This may encourage your kitties to eat together. Hope this helps!

Cats definitely establish a hierarchy in a household. The "top cat" is usually literally that - he will be the one who eats first, who gets the highest perch on the cat tree, who has the best spot by the window, and so on. Interestingly enough, it's not always the biggest cat; at one point I had four cats, and the smallest (but definitely TOUGHEST) cat was most definitely the head honcho!

Oh yes....def. a hierarchy in the house of cats! :) I have 3 cats and one is def. trying to ensure the newest one knows her place. (thats the hardest part of getting a new at...letting them see who will be boss)

As long as your cats know YOU are actually head of the house its all good. :) (you control the food and discipline when needed)
