Losing weight first starts with being happy with yourself and loving *YOU* on the inside. Try everyday to smile and laugh, LAUGHING is supser helpful. It seems weird but it does! =) Try to follow a 1600 calorie diet.
It's best to have 5 meals a day that way you need get to hungry because that leads to over eating.
Here is a couple ideas to help you ge started:
Breakfast:
Oatmeal and a piece of wheat toast w/ 2tsp. trans free margarine. -OR- Strawberry Banana Smoothie (In a blender process until smooth, 1 small banana, 1/2 cup strawberries, 1/2 cup fat free milk, 1/2 cup low fat plain yogurt, 2 tsp. honey, and 1 or 2 ice3 cubes. You can have your smoothie with 1 or 2 pieces of whole wheat toast. -OR- An egg on a piece of wheat toast with salsa (make 2 servings) ---If you are still huingry at breakfast have a small piece of fruit.
Lunch:
1 cup soup (water based not cream base) and a Cheese and Tomato Sandwich: 2 slices whole wheat bread, 2 slices reduced fat cheese, mustard and sliced tomato. -OR_ instead of the tomato sandwich 2 pieces whole wheat with 2 slices of Turkey and Mustard. -OR- A Lean Cuisine Frozen Meal (These are actually very tasty. The meat is delicious.
Dinner: 1 piece Chicken Breast with 2 side dishes: 1 cup steamed veggies, 1 sweet potato, 3/4 cup corn, 3/4 cup butternut squash, etc.
Dessert:
Light Ice Cream or Frozen Yogurt:
3/4 cup with no more than 110 calories per 1/2 cup topped with tablespoon chocalate syrup.
Snacks:
Steamed Veggies, fruit, any nuts (these are great protein),
my personal favorite snack is Light and Fit 60 calorie yogurt cup with a 100 calorie Granola Bar. (I cruch up the Granola Bar and put it inside of my yogurt.)
Also there are alot of great ideas if you go to fast food for example....
Wendys: Ultimate Chicken Grill Sandwich- 390 calories

McDonalds:
Caesar Salad grilled Chicken-220 calories
Bacon Ranch Salad w/grilled chicken 260 calories
Salad Dressing: Vinaigrette: 40 calories
Salad Dressing: Italian : 60 calories

Subway :(THE BEST CHOICE)
You can have any of the under 6 grams of fat sandwiches! They're delicious just No MAyo. My favorite is Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki. I like to get a foot long and have a 6' for lunch and a 6' for dinner.

Also make sure you do 30 minutes of excercise 5 days a week. I like to walk to the store and back instead of drive =)

This was just some ideas to help you on your way.

Also its great to drink one glass of water before eating. Water is very important!

GOOD LUCK!!!

Whatever I do, I make sure I drink lots of water. I'm 5"4 and three quarters and 130 pounds. The most I''ve weighed was 143 and I found that I still looked fine at that weight. In high school (being 115pounds) I became obsessed with my weight because some girls criticized me for being too thin. I couldn't help it, all there ever was to eat at home was beans and rice morning, day and night. There was also the option of eggs too or peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Occasionally, there was beef which was a real treat. Now, a person can only eat so much of the same thing everyday without feeling sick. So I found myself eating at other peoples houses to eat meat. However, that diet will keep you at a low weight and you will get the protein you need with beans or peanut butter. When I got into foster care, I took advantage of eating to the point where it became gluttonous. I don't think 143 was a bad weight but the amount I was eating was ridiculous. Now that I'm on my own, I eat whatever I want but with moderation. I drink lots of water and I feel that is what helped me slim down quite a bit.

I am 5'7" and I lost 20 pounds- went from 140 to 120 pounds.

How did I do it?
I 1. wrote down everything i ate for a month. very important- i wrote down everything i ate AND how many calories per item......
this of course took some research in the beginning- had to measure out portion size, figure how many calories were in each piece of fruit, etc...
2. wrote down how much i exercised...
3. recorded my weight daily.

Then, i analyzed the data, studied the patterns and decided what changes i had to make to lose weight...
for me, i had to go on a 1600 calorie diet, exercise for an hour five times a week and had to cut down on alcohol consumption....had to limit myself to one night per week of drinking….

this might sound hard, but thats what its all about....losing weight is hard, thats why 66% of americans are overweight...

I also found this cool article specifically about losing weight in college...

Lose weight with negative calorie foods

The foods, which utilize more calories to digest than the calorie foods in fact have, are known as negative calorie foods. It is harder for the body to consume calories from these negative calorie foods. I mean to say that our body has to work hard in order to take out calories from these foods. With this kind of food very small amount of calorie actually turn in to fat, as there is very small amount of calorie available.

You will get the maximum benefit of negative calorie foods when you take them alone without any junk food. There are large number of fruits and vegetables, which are having negative calorie results. Some of these foods are Raspberry, papaya, strawberry, zucchini, Carrot, Beets, and Asparagus.

Hi! I have been on a diet since May, and it has turned from a diet into a lifestyle. I am 5'7". I started out at 219, and I am down to 177 lbs--42 lbs and losing! My goal is 150, maybe 140. I was recently asked what I am doing and I posted it on my website, so I am just going to paste it on here. Sorry, it's kind of long, but it is thorough.

1. Moderation! I have lessened the amount of food I eat. However, I have cut out NO food. If I really want that Reeses, then dammit I'm going to have that Reeses...but, I will only eat one (usually...) and will eat very well for the rest of the day. I never fast or intentionally skip meals. (I don't eat breakfast as a rule, but that's because eating in the morning makes me sick.) You HAVE to eat to lose weight. I try to eat no more than 350 calories at a meal, but if I go over by too much, again, I eat very well for the rest of the day.

2. Chicken or vegetarian! I have almost eliminated beef and pork from my diet. For instance, when I eat Mexican food, I get the vegetarian or chicken option instead of ordering the beefy goodness. I do eat steak and burgers on occasion, but then it goes back to moderation--I only eat half at one setting, usually.

3. Salad, salad, salad! When I can afford salad, I eat it for meal after meal. With a light dressing--especially balsamic vinaigrette or raspberry (although a truly light raspberry is hard to find)--a good salad can have just over 100 calories!

4. Opting for wheat/grain! I am a carb addict. But, white bread, normal spaghetti, etc. are full of calories. So, I always buy wheat/whole grain bread and spaghetti. I did not cut out carbs. Carbs are essential to a healthy, active lifestyle. The South Beach Diet and Atkins are not safe diets.

5. Exercise...!? No, I don't make a point to exercise every day. However, I do do something active every day. Even things as simple as walking to class or cleaning my apartment help. I also do things that not everyone has access too, like construction work. I work in a theatre scene shop. I have recently re-started playing DDR, which is a great workout!

6. Pills. Not diet pills!!! I take a One A Day Weight Smart every day. Not everyone has gotten weight loss results with these, but they seem to have helped me. And, they are great multivitamins, giving your body the nutrients it needs to help itself lose weight. I am also on a birth control pill called Cyclessa. My doctor said that people have noticed either no weight change or weight loss with this, and it kicked my very long plateau out the door when I started. I am not recommending that everyone goes out and gets on the pill of course--it's not for everyone--but if you're in the market, talk to your doctor about this one.

7. Water! I try to drink at least 8 glasses of water, aiming for 10. I have cut out almost all other drinks, except tea. I think one of the main reasons I think I gained weight was because I started drinking a lot of milk--whole milk at that! Now, if I drink anything besides water, I go for the light or skim kind. I am a bit of a Starbucks addict, and I always order my drinks skinny with no whip cream.

8. The internet! This site (my personal weight loss blog) has helped me a lot. The people on here are so supportive and wonderful; they have helped me stay on track. Also, www.sparkpeople.com is a great site. It has recipes, workout tips...just about anything you can ask for!

9. I don't count anything! I counted calories for a week and almost went insane. I think the pressure of counting calories or being so concerned about every little thing that goes into my body would cause me to quit.

10. Motivation! I do get myself gifts at every certain pre-determined number of pounds. I don't have a lot of money, so it is a pretty big deal for me to buy myself presents. Also, I have an ultimate goal date, but only occasionally have goal dates in between. My ultimate day to be 150 is April 1. I think having a bunch of goal dates would just lead to disappointment for me. Also, I have 3 major motivators: a. I am getting married and want to look good in white, b. I want to be able to wear a two piece bathing suit for the first time, c. I am going to get my navel pierced when I reach my ultimate goal, which I have wanted to do for 7 or 8 years. Also, I take a picture of myself in more-or-less the same clothes at every goal weight, so I can actually see the pounds go away! Finally, my weight loss ticker ticker...I love seeing it go farther and farther to the right almost every week. (www.tickerfactory.com)
