How we managed to go an entire year w/out travelling on a plane w/ our now 14 mo. old daughter...no idea. But...we're a week out from our first trip and the packing trade-off begins. We're headed to Portland, Oregon for Thanskgiving. Staying at a Hotel downtown. Figuring we do not need a car as we'll be in walking distance of most things and visiting friends otherwise. Big question...do we take a car seat?? What about from the airport to the hotel via taxi? I've never paid attention...how do Infants/Toddlers travel in taxi's? Aside form the obvious (clothes, lovies, etc)...any other tips on what to take and what to not bother?

Tx-in-advance!

You'll need to bring a car seat along for the plane anyway so that will resolve the need during the rest of the trip. If friends will be driving you around you'll need a car seat, unless they can provide one.

Unless you're bringing your own food for your child, contact the airline and ask them about booking a kid's meal. Check with the hotel where you're staying and ask if they will provide a crib that is approved by the.Consumer Product Safety Commission. If they don't know or if they say they do, ask them to email you the certification information from the tag on the crib. Although most hotels provide cribs as a service, you'd be surprised at how awful /hazardous some of them are, so be cautious. I've seen some that I wouldn't let an animal sleep in.

If the hotel can't or won't provide the info, change hotels. Your child's safety is much more important than where you are staying.

We had to take a booster seat for the airplane. We also took some snacks she liked and small hand held games. Get her some headphones or even take a portable DVD player with her favorite videos. The whole key to travel is to keep them from getting bored. Also a good idea is to nap when they nap and you won't be tired when they have all the energy. Good luck on your trip.

You better bring with you disposeable diapers, wet ones, sterilized bottles with water, milk, sweater and bibs, hand towels, mosquito repellent, mittens and bonnets.
