It seems that almost every week we here of a bomb or some other means of killing police or potential recruites in Iraq. Why can they not fortify these buildings to the extent an army base is? Also would it not make more sense to hire an absurd number of Iraqi's to police and build their army and help resolve this conflict. I would think that these added police and soldiers would have money to spend from thier wages and help build their own economy, surely this couldn't cost more than the lives of our soldiers!

In Iraq nearly every building is susceptible to a car bomb a suicide bomber (any guy standing in line to apply) or a mortar. Even the Green Zone isn't 100% safe. And when I worked on Camp Victory in early 2005, a major car bomb exploded near one of the gates and a 230mm rocket exploded 150m from our vehicle staging area...again on a secured military base. We also had a rocket hit the front of the main PX on the camp...a half kilometer from my cabin. It killed one soldier and injured 87 others.

And hiring an absurd amount of Iraqi's...OK, but you can't make them want to be policemen...same as having them join the army. Certainly I agree that having Iraqis police and defend their own cities and country is the best of all worlds. But for many reasons we are not there yet. And I don't think it is due to a lack of money.

Because after our unprovoked invasion of Iraq, Rumsfeld just dismissed the Iraqi military who might have been made into a police force, turning them into the enemy who are now killing indiscriminately anyone who is trying to participate in organizing an Iraqi police force.

If we had left Saddam in power none of this would have happened and the world would have been a safer place. What did GW do? He invaded Iraq and caused death to 300,000 + people including 2800+ US soldiers. There is only one solution to Iraq's problem: Put Saddam back in power and see the terrorism stop in 24 hours....
