I was just wondering if it was the same as the police, which can only stop you if you do something wrong.

Ok i am hearing alot of ow they are federal police, but I am serious, what are the laws? I live in a border city and was wondering if they can just stop you cuz they feel like it. Are we suppose to pull over for any car with blue and red lights?

Border Police can stop you from crossing the border either into or out of the country. Traffic violations have nothing to do with why they would stop you. If they did see you commit a traffic violation, they might stop and hold you until the local authority shows up, tho. Remember: BORDER POLICE are FEDERAL OFFICERS and have wide jurisdiction.

The border patrol guard has limited powers and stopping vehicles or pedestrians or suspicious people for casual conversation,is within their authority, so I am saying "yes"
If you are talking about the ones who are at the border checkpoints, they have more power- like detaining you and seizing your vehicle.

They might be asked to be on the lookout for certain individuals and they will simply look at occupants of passing cars/trucks etc.
The police have wider powers and they can also do the same thing, ie set up random road checks for the same reasons.

They can stop you without a reason even if you are not trying to cross over. There are border checks all along the border of Mexico.

No, they cannot randomly stop people for NOTHING. They must have reasonable cause to justify the stop. They can get away with this , because it is up to them to use discretion in these cases. They could stop you on some made up probable cause, like your tail lights aren't working, but in actuality they are.

They can stop you for any reason. It doesnt matter. If they think you look suspicious they can stop you and go through your vehicle to check for anything. It is annoying but just think its a good thing and it means they are doing their job properly, and protecting our country.
