I think they are emotionally ready around 2. It can be hard to get them to get adjusted to their new found freedom, it takes patience, because now they'll feel empowered to come and go as they please. I think you'll know when your child is ready. S/he will probably be trying to climb out of their crib, at that point it's safer for them to have a toddler bed.

I put my daughter in a toddler bed when she started jumping out of her crib and I was worried that she was going to hurt herself badly. Usually about the time that they can climb out it time to put them in the toddler bed.

Hey Now....

We got her a bed when she flipped herself out of her crib...

It becomes a toss up...
Is the child ready for a "big girls" bed or
is she gonna get hurt by flipping herself out of her crib....
We chose the bed...
They have nice "Theme" beds now so the child can choose one that they like.

Good Luck...

You'll know...

Usually as soon as they are able to climb out of their crib. If you think about it, the only reason to keep them in the crib is to keep them confined... so if they can climb out (and possible hurt themselves doing it) there's no point to keep them in it.

Do make sure you get one with rails to keep them from rolling out of it. and make sure that they are safeguarded, in case they do get out of bed. put the kiddie locks on the doors and safeguard stairs, etc.
