Speech capabilities are built into Vista's operating system. However, if you have an XP system, you would need to install the Speech engine as a software component. This allows you to get some of Vista's speech capabilities into your XP system.

Microsoft offers their speech engine free for downloading. Several vendors have developed software applications that use the speech engine. You may want to consider e-Speaking ( http://www.e-Speaking.com ) for installation on your XP system. This software uses the Microsoft speech engine to assist you in implementing speech recognition technology.

Videos of the software are on YouTube:

In summary, you don't have to wait until Vista to get speech recognition on your XP computer using Microsoft's speech engine. You can download and install the speech engine on an XP computer today.
