Don't have the back up information for you, you'll have to research that yourself. But here are a couple of ideas you can work on.
Advantages: Provides a place to isolate the system from the pump, so when you have to replace the pump you don't have to drain the whole system.
Might be able to use as a throttling valve to provide some measure of flow control in the cooling system
Able to start the pump against a closed valve and open slowly to minimize water hammer.
Disadvantages: Additional frictional loss in the line (wasted energy?).
Gate valves can function poorly (not seal properly) if they aren't exercised frequently. Also, material can build up in the seat and make shut off impossible.
