I was not sure until i spoke in tongues that it was a natural phenomena. Here is how it went.
I went down to the alter expecting a gift from God. They made me kneel for 45 minutes with drums and guitars blaring in my ear, the preacher or one of the other men kept a tight hold on my forehead and they told me to just pray anything, say anything even if it made no sense, I had to hold my hands high in the air the whole time ,and if I could not think of anything to say just say Jesus, Jesus, Jesus over and over.
After 45 minutes of this I was exhausted and my words started to become gibberish and I went into a trance like state and lost all control of my body and voice.
I knew it was not God, but the effects of the music, handhold on my forehead and kneeling, the hands held high for 45 minutes, and all that I just naturally had a phenomena which is real, but not supernatural and is psychological.
The preacher and all the Church started praising God that I had finally prayed through. I could have left it at that, but I knew it was not from God so I just told them what I knew had happened, and they threw me out of the church and told me to never return and claimed I was demon possessed because I blasphemed the holy ghost by denying what I experienced was from God. My dad spent the next 30 years hating me because in his eyes I was a demon. He died hating me .
heck you would think I would know if it was from God or not. Sheesh!

If you decided it was a bunch of hooey then why would you count it as speaking in tongues?
And no, I haven't "spoken in tongues" but when cursing or making up words as I go along.

I used to belong to the more charismatic Christian group who does the talking in tongues thing.
I was very involved and I experienced something very moving in me when I talked in tongues. I don't know if it were my own emotions or if it was God doing something wonderful to my inner being, but I really don't care.
Things in my life are different now. Christ is still a large part of my life, but in a much quieter sense. In retrospect, perhaps my talking in "God's language" could have simply just come from me. It doesn't matter.
Many people experience the same deep movement that I used to and I am happy for them that it seems to do good things for them. Is it a bunch of hooey? Who cares? How does it hurt you if someone else enjoys it? Let them be.

I pray in tongues, and do not consider it hooey. I consider it a gift and priviledge of God Almighty.
Jude 1:20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,
I Cr 13;8a, Love never fails!!!!!

I have...and it's not a bunch of hooey, it's a spiritual gift that I believe is private, but can be distorted and confusing when you start asking others to interpret what it means etc.

I'd wager it is possibly a fist stuffed with 'balderdash.' I't say the latter is a number of 'hogwash'. These are historic time phrases our grandparents in most cases used ."Baloney", used to be used for the duration of WWII and the 50's.

Before you decide it's a bunch of hooey, consider what the Apostle Paul said:
"I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all."
"Forbid not to speak with tongues."
Of course, this only applies if you're saved.

I speak in tongues and I know it is a precious gift from God for me to communicate with Him in a language given by the Holy Spirit which the devil does not understand and feels very uncomfortable with. When you pray ie speak in tongues your spirit prays your mind is not involved (1 Cor 14:14). The Apostle Paul encouraged Christians to pray in the spirit ie in tongues and to pray with understanding ie with our minds (1Cor 14:15). The Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Cor 14:18, 'I thank my God I speak in tongues more than you all.' If Apostle Paul valued speaking speaking in tongues it will certainly be a great blessing to follow his example, Speaking in tongues is very biblical. 1 Cor 14:39 . . . do not forbid to speak with tongues.
