Does anyone know of any ways to treat depression that costs no money.Self-control would help here, but I lack that too.Any tips or anything besides negative feedback would greatly help.

I used to exercise.I've been playing drums for most my life and I used to play soccer.Stopped playing soccer when home life got a little difficult.Stopped exercising when I lost interest.Stopped having sex,and recently I've been playing drums less and less.Everything I enjoy I've done less and less because I lost my will to care.Slowly through this past year,I recently realised,I've been caring less and less and it's actually started affecting my physical sense of pain and feeling in general. This is why I've gotta do something soon.

Exercise will help. Prayer will definitely help. also try taking 5-HTP, this is a natural supplement that can be bought inexpensively at health food store or even at walmart. It works in the same way as prescription antidepressants work and sometimes even works better. Try the 5-HTP it really worked for me. I was so depressed that i didn't even want to get out of bed everyday, then after a few days of taking it, I caught myself laughing again.

Yes, you are correct. Even a depression which starts as a simple depression due to an external event, can become a brain chemical imbalance issue. The brain tends to cotinue to produce neurotransmitters in similar proportion to what it did yesterday, so if you were depressed, it tends to be a self perpetuating cycle. At this point, a trip to a physician or even a psychiatrist would be a good idea. There are excellent drugs available which when USED FOR THE SHORT TERM, can alter the abnormal and non constructive proportions of serotonin, dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, etc. You can indeed feel better. Afterward, it might be good to accept a referral to a licensed clinical social worker who can help fortify you through discussion and problem solving so that you are less vulnerable to serious depressive episodes and potential self harm in the future. Best wishes, my friend. There are good and real reasons to have hope.

Exercise is very good as when you exercise, it releases happy endorphines, which make you feel happier as well as more energetic. Even if you just do some exercise at home. Yoga is also excellent too because as well as getting you fit and flexible, it also helps to release negative emotions.

Get yourself a pad and pen, and start writing lines every night before you go to bed: I am a wonderful person, I am calm and confident, I am loving and lovable, etc. Whatever you want to be true for you. Thoughts become things and the more you write something down, the more you will believe it to be so and it will therefore become true for you. Tell yourself each night before you go to bed 'I will wake up tomorrow morning feeling refreshed and happy'. When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself 'today will be a wonderful day'. Look at yourself in the mirror at least once a day and tell yourself 'I love you, you are a wonderful person'. You may find this difficult at first, but persevere until it feels comfortable and you believe it. Every time you find a negative thought coming through your head, then imagine you have a light switch at the tip of your fingers to just switch it off and immediately change this to something positive. Keep on doing this and it will become automatic and easier with time.

Try taking some St John's Wort as a doctor told me that it is the herbal equivalent to a well-known anti-depressant, but without any of the side effects because it is completely natural. It's also not very expensive and unlike any prescribed medication, it will not be addictive, hard to come off or have side-effects.

There's a wonderful book that you might want to read - 'You Can Heal Your Life' by Louise Hay. This was my 'bible' for many years and I'm forever buying copies and passing them on to friends. This tells you how to change your life by changing your thinking and releasing all negative experiences that are causing these thoughts.

Hope this helps.

If your depression is the result of low blood sugar, then eating for that condition will help with the depression. Check out www.hufa.org. Low blood sugar erodes self control, because the brain will do almost anything when blood sugar (fuel) is low, to bring it back up. Too low is a coma - and depression is near that.

I found my self control, and self esteem and self confidence improved as I got a handle on keeping my blood sugar level.

You must spend money. Generic Fluoxetine is very cheap and the most cost effective drug. The effects of depression on your body is worse than any other thing. Fluoxetine 20mg in the morning for 6 months may be enough. In my country (India) you will get 15 to 20 branded capsules for 1 US Dollar.

The psychological methods won't help in severe depression. Untreated depression gets worse every day.

Sunlight helps me, but the best thing is exercise. I know it's hard to get motivated, but once you get started, it's not that bad. I try to walk at least 30 minutes (and it's great if the sun is out) 3-4 times per week. Both of these cause changes in the brain that fight depression.

I would HIGHLY recommend writing in a journal. You would be surprised at how much regular writing can help. Also, if there is someone you can trust and talk to on a regular basis, this is the best way...and if not, try finding a psychologist. They are often willing to work with you about payment options...you may end up paying little to nothing. The MOST important thing is to get the help you need.
