I am so sorry about your cat. I think getting a kitten is a great idea, because you have a chance to "grow" together--like, maybe if you want to clean your cat's teeth, (a good idea), it's best to start very young. Also with clipping nails--& many other things you couldn't do with an older cat who is set in her/his ways. MOST people adopt kittens, & that's sad for the "orphan" older cat, but since you've just lost one, seems like a good start for you. SOMEBODY here gave a really good suggestion; I've forgotten who but I gave them a thumbs up--I hope you find it.

I went back & found it! It was "Sarah - The - Aqua." I'd thought "VB" was good too, except--it might be a little too obvious, & your mum might catch on to "manipulations." I hope you get your kitten!

I'm sorry to hear about your cat.

One way is to tell her an advantage of getting a kitten, such as they are cute and cuddley, they get used to you and like you faster than adult cats ETC.
Another is if you find a kitten take it home and ask if you can keep him over-night. If she agrees in the morning say, "Well, time to take this poor poor animal to the pound. Let's just hope he's not there too long because he will be put down." How could she say no?

Or you just make a pro's and con's list of an adult cat to a kitten and hope for the best.

Maybe you could convince her that getting an adult cat and a kitten would be good...save two lives. :)

Older cats deserve the same love as a kitten. They have often just been brought in because of reasons they didnt deserve. If you get a kitten; please get a kitten from a no kill shelter or Humane Society. To get one of the kittens from someone giving them away is to encourage that person to not get their own animal spayed. (their reasons often are "well, I can always get homes for them")

Sorry for the soapbox...you sound like a responsible person to get an animal. I'm sorry for the loss of your other kitty...and glad you are getting another one.

Bombard her with pics of kittens. Ginger ones work best and just be cool and not too pushy otherwise she would say no out of punishment but you can see her side as well the older cat would rather live with a loving family than dies in a cattery.

well....it may be upsetting when the older cat dies...plus then you'll want a new one (although not straight away) so would it not make more sense to just get you a kitten rather than 2 new ones which might be more inconvieniant. but make sure you can look after a kitten

sit next to her non-stop and go "Meow" over and over until she agrees on getting a kitten.

"Borrow" a couple of mice from the school lab, turn them loose in your mom's kitchen, then tell her "WE NEED A KITTEN"!
