Check out the Metro Area North of Atl you will fine many nice places to live and a wide range of the price tag. Don't be shy the father away from ATL generally the better price and more for the money. A 30 mile drive from ATL will get you far without spending alot of time

The Alpharetta and Sandy Springs areas are really nice. I'm not sure what you consider "affordable" but definetely check out those locations. They're both in Fulton County. Also check out northern Gwinnett County (town called Lawrenceville). Great schools there.

I live in Atlanta in a neighborhood that sounds similar to your description. It's called Candler park, near to Inman Park. they're located in the city on the eastern side, and a two story 2-3 bedroom 2-3 bathroom would be about 300 to 400 thousand. It's an alright part of town, low crime and lots of things being built, including townhomes and condos.
