I have always wondered about that myself. But I think the reason it is done it that the courts try to keep kids with their family if at all possible. And because there is some distance between the grandparent and grandchild then there is between a parent and child, there might not be as intense a reaction to the child's behavior. Hopefully the grandparent has mellowed out a bit with age and will not make the same mistake with the grandchild. Also the only other option is to place the kid in a foster home and many foster home are as bad as the homes the kids come out of because some foster parents are only in it for the money.

there is a saying "the nut doesn't fall too far from the tree".....however....All people are different...Some people come from a very good home and hook up with the wrong sort of people, get into drugs, choose abusive partners, etc. I am sure you have seen things on tv where the person comes from a good home, and gets all screwed up...Like "intervention"....the people who love them enable them to continue the distructive behavior, because they love them. There are lots of people who should not be parents for a number of reasons. They are immature, they are selfish(drug use/alcohol use around the kids)...caught up in a life style that is not how they were raised, and are stuck. There are so many different circumstances that a grandparent would obtain custody of their childrens children....Not all people screwed up raising their own...They have minds of their own and perhaps just made really bad choices, for reasons only known to them...Not necessarily how they were raised....

You can't always blame the parents. We all make our own decisions and not everyone choses the right one. Besides I always think it's great when the grandparent WANTS to take in a child. At least the government isn't footing the whole bill and the child is with kin. But you're correct too.......it's not always in the child's best interest. I guess we just have to hope the judge is deciding what is best for the children.

They probably know better than anyone the mistakes they made.
