dont try to do it yourself, you can hurt your dog and make his glands impacted. let the groomer do it. the only time is really has to be done is when they get full and your dog start scooting or licking his butt, or his butt smells really bad. you can help your dog express his anal glands himself by feeding him alot of fiber. mixing cooked oatmeal or brown rice in with their food helps keep them from filling. feed a high quality dog food like nutro, solid gold, purina proplan, natural balance. stay away from cheap foods and foods that have corn in the first ingredient.

We had a Lab mix with the same problem.
To begin with, the groomer should NEVER do anything to your dog unless YOU ASK them too. That is just not right. I would find another groomer.
My Vet said some dogs have this problem and some don't. The other answers are correct, when the gland gets full, with no release they scoot their butt along the floor to get some relief.
We found with our dog that a very long walk could work too. He would come home or during the walk have a bowel movement and be O.K.
You don't want to do it at home. The odor is dreadful !! You could hurt him physically too. It is not worth it. Some times if it is full, it sprays all over the place. My Vet said if it continues to be full and happens on a regular basis, surgery can be done to remove it. The cost is about $500.00.
I still cannot believe your groomer did that.........

We had a Lab mixture with an identical issue. first of all, the groomer could in no way do something on your canines except YOU ASK them too. which will in no way be precise. i'd discover yet another groomer. My Vet reported some canines have this issue and a few do no longer. the different solutions are astounding, whilst the gland gets complete, without launch they scoot their butt alongside the floor to get some alleviation. We discovered with our canines that a very long walk could paintings too. He would come residing house or during the walk have a bowel flow and be O.ok. you do no longer desire to do it at residing house. The scent is dreadful !! you are able to injury him bodily too. it is not well worth it. some circumstances whether it somewhat is complete, it sprays in each single place. My Vet reported if it keeps to be complete and occurs on a time-honored foundation, surgical treatment could be finished to eliminate it. the fee is approximately $500.00. I nonetheless can't believe your groomer did that.........

I agree with the first person who said that some groomers just do it . I've I've never had to do it with any dog I've ever had. You can usually tell if the dog's anal glands need expressed because the dog will scoot around on his butt , which usually does the trick of expressing them without your help. If this was the first time your dog ever had his anal glands expressed, you probably don't have to worry about it.

A lot of groomers will do it every time you get him groomed . Some will only do it if you ask because its pretty nasty although the dog needs it .

gland around his anus, usually seeps to keep the anus lubricated, can sometimes get blocked and become painful, has to be squeezed and it is uncomfortable for the dog, it doesn't smell very good either. they shouldn't have to do it every time.
