I have a female puppy that is about 5 months old. My family rescued her from a shelter and they require her to be spayed. When is teh best time to do this? How long is the recovery time? And, what exactly do they do? It's too hard to actually talk to her vet. I just need to call and schedule it ASAP. I'm a first time puppy owner, so I appreciate all of the answers.

Some vets prefer to wait until the dog is a year old. They tend to be less fragile after that age. However, a female dog in heat is a huge problem. Try calling your vet and asking them what they recommend. The receptionist should be able to tell you their policy. If it's too hard to speak with your vet about something so important, I recommend switching vets. Vets are supposed to be sympathetic, professional, and have no problems answering questions. A vet who is 'too busy' for you isn't someone I'd want taking care of *my* pets.

Good luck to you and congrats on your new little one! You've saved a life! : )

My Vet recommends NOT spaying until six mos of age. I have two shelter rescues that were spayed way before then. It won't necessarily hurt them but the Vet says it is healthier for them to be six mos. old and not younger. The shelter may not provide that option as part of the contract for adopting a dog from them. The err on the side of caution because they don't want the dogs to breed since there are so many unwanted dogs filling up shelters, more than they can keep and so many are euthanized.
Your puppy should be fine either way since she is already 5 mos old. The recovery time for a female is a bit longer as the surgery is more extensive. My dogs were all three spayed and one had complications of the surgery. She was real hyper and got a hernia that had to be repaired. The other two did fine, were groggy that day and a bit slower for a few days. Whomever does the surgery should give you instructions for care afterwards. If not be sure to ASK what they recommend you do. Congrats on your new puppy.

It should be done when the puppy is around 6 months old. It is a full hysterectomy. After the operation, she will be back to normal in 2-3 days. She may get sick after the operation due to the anesthesia. My puppy threw-up on the way home from the vet, but she slept the rest of the night and 2 days later she was back to normal. Just call a vet and schedule it. It's like scheduling a dentist appointment. You may want to inquire about the cost. Some vets charge more than others. I think it cost me around $250, but I know you can get it done cheaper. I chose to get it done at my local vet, so she could get all her shots and everything at the same place.

Get her spayed soon, dogs go in heat between 6 to 9 months old. Its easy call the vet she will be ripping around in a week or so after.

Why isn't the shelter taking care of the spaying appointment?
Spaying a dog can be done at anytime in their life, as early 2 months old (if they weigh 2lbs). The surgery removes the uterus and ovaries, to prevent pregnancy (and heat). It will also cut out the risk of ovarian cancer.
The recovery period is pretty quick. She will have to be prevented from running and getting wet, for the first 1-2 weeks while the incision heals (there will be stitches, and running & bathes must wait until after the stitches are removed).

I really couldn't tell you what they do exactly, but as a responsible owner I encourage you to have your pet "fixed" when your vet recommends it. Unless, of course, you plan to breed your dog. I would also recommend that you go to a vet and not an organization that has a big discount, Ie. any spay or neuter clinic. It will be safer for your dog. Good luck.

Get her spayed as soon as possible.
It's about a week or two for recovery time.
They go in, do what they need to do, then stitch her back up.
My dog got her stitches off in 4 days

Now is the best time to get her fixed. It is a common procedue and vets have preformed tonnes of them. You'll need to keep her quite and calm after her surgary. You have to make sure her stitches are not red, leaking(blood or clear fluid) and that she is not licking them. The accual spay removes the uterus, overies and falopian tubes. The make a small incsion and have a special hook that they pull everything out with. My vet sent me home with a sheet on do's and don'ts after a spay.

Yes my dog is spayed and my cats too, it helps prolong your pets life and helps them not get serious diseses, the recovery time is about a week. Also spaying will help your puppy to calm down.

You can go ahead and get it done now before her first heat. They will either completely remove the ovaries or even the whole uterus. They SHOULD give you some pain meds untill the stichs either absorb or if they have to be reoved, and she'll have to wear a cone, I decorated my dogs with glitter when she had it done. Good LUCK!!
