Which one would you get first...a tattoo or a belly ring? Note: It's something that you have to hide from your parent(s) and you want to make a very wise choice. If you get the tattoo, where would you get it. Please have some reasoning too.

A belly ring would be easly noticed ! I would get the tattoo on my hip , it will be covered most of the time by your under garments and clothes.

Put the tattoo somewhere that will be hidden by clothes all the time. Way up high on your hip where your underwear or swimming suit would cover it or your lower back well down below the waistline but above your tailbone. Those are both places that nobody will see it unless you're nude or want to show them. If you have longer hair you could get it on the back of your neck so your hair will cover it, or maybe on your back between your shoulderblades. A belly ring can be removed once it's healed to 'hide' that you have it, though the scar is visible on close looks. Before it's healed, though, you need to leave it in and keep it clean. If people are used to seeing you in midriff-baring shirts and you're suddenly wearing longer shirts, it might raise questions. Also belly rings are obvious under tighter fitting clothes.

A lot of states have laws that you can't get tattooed or pierced if you're under 18 without your parent or guardian present and their signed consent. Several states have laws that you can't do either if you're under 16 even if your parents give their consent.

I'm assuming you're over 18 and living on your own. If you're not over18 then no tattoo artist of any ethical merit will ink you- and the ones who will you don't want to come within10ft of! If you're not out on your own then out of respect for your parents I would suggest waiting to get inked until you are living on your own as they are providing you with a home, food, clothing etc... It would be disrespectful to go against their wishes while living under their roof.

Now... assuming all is good and well- you're of legal age and living on your own dime.... I would go with the piercing first as this is non-permanent and if you change your mind you can remove the jewlery yourself. However, I would like to make mention that the year is 2006 and belly rings have not been popular since 1999- I find it's passe.

If you decide to get a tattoo I would suggest getting something somewhat non-specific. I used to advise clients against initals and names (except their own) as time can bring about unexpected changes- ones where you may find yourself no longer wanting that name or initial on your body.

My first tattoo was a Celtic knot with some shading- I had it placed in the center of my upper back.

I chose a Celtic knot because 1. I am Scotish, 2. It's very generalized, 3. At the time it was a representation of my personal beliefs that everyone and everything is interconnected. I chose to have the tattoo placed on my back because having worked at a tattoo parlour for the past year (at that point) I realized that not all employers appreciate a visible tattoo. I did not want to close the door on any unknow future opportunities. Yes, I know this is all incredibly square and un-hip but I have seen more than my fairshare of bad ink... It's just... well... bad!

Take time to sit down and think of what in your life has meaning... Are you a person of faith? Perhaps something that represents your faith... a three pointed tribal design (very non-specific) that could represent the father, the son, and the holy ghost... I know it's a stretch. I reccomend something that can have meaning to you but isn't necessarily something that just anyone off the street could point at and go... "Oh yeah, that's ____!"

After I got married I got a small heart on my hip to memoralize my wedding... Now, only I and my husband know that the heart on my hip represents our wedding day. To a general onlooker (not that I'm walking around naked regularly or anything) it's just a cute little heart in an inconspicuous spot. God forbid that anything should happen and my husband and I seperate- I will not have to live with his name or our wedding date on my body for the rest of my life. A heart can have different meanings and I can always add a background or detail to it if I so choose.

Despite the fact that there are treatments available to remove tattoos you should ALWAYS consider a tattoo permanent.

And yes, it hurts. Personally I consider the pain only slight- more like uncomfortable or annoying. I've seen the tiniest girls sit through hours of tattooing without batting an eye and big burly men break down and weep like a baby as soon as the needle touches them... It's very subjective.

Do some thinking about what has meaning in your life and go from there when trying to select a design- Best wishes to you!

PS- Call the shop I listed below and talk to them if you have questions about the tattooing process- they're extremely knowledgeable and pleasant to work with.

I should tell you to wait until you are of age...but that would be the grown up mature thing to do...I got mine belly button done when I was 15 with a friends ID...I followed every direction that was given to me and took really good care of it. Noone found out. Of course I didnt go around flashing off to everyone either. It took about 6 months to fully heal..which is normal. I recently have gotten inked on my lower back and I love it. And the fact that I waited until I was legal to get it made me appreciate it even more. Plus a tat is PERMANENT...you can always take the belly ring out and let it grow up. So if you must be rebelious go with the belly ring as long as you can abide by the piercers rules and when you turn eighteen go get that tattoo that took you so long to pick out and you will love it even more!

I would get a Tattoo, i have seen to many infectious people with belly rings and to easily to rip out.

I have a Tattoo on the lower part of my back. unless u are wearing a two piece swimming suit or a small shirt, ur pants or shirt would hide it. Or right by hip area. the only way someone would see it is if u were running around in ur birthday suit. especially parents. how would they see something like that.

The belly ring. You can hide that easier, trust me, I have one, and after it's heeled you can take it out when having to be seen in a bikini around them. They would be more mad if you got a tattoo, lol, but if you want one, just get it on your inner hip bone, pretty low. Goodluck

You should get your bellybutton pierced first because tattoos last forever and you can take out the bellybutton ring if you want. But if you want to get a tattoo..get one that is underneath where your underwear would be so that no one can see it! Don't get a tattoo on your lower back because they are called tramp stamps!!!!
