I am worried that a friend could be suicidal. She is in therapy, but I think she needs medication. How can she get a prescription for anti-depressants? What is the procedure for having her committed against her will? We live in Illinois.

I work at a hospital and our docs prescribe anti-depressants all the time. If your friend had mentioned suicide to you then you can have her committed against her will. Call the police if you think she is in danger. Or check out the bottom of the www.postsecret.com blog, they have a hotline with the answers you need.

If your worried that your friend is suicidal you need to get her help. It's good that she's in therapy but apparently it's not enough. She needs to go and see her doctor. Each doctor is different on deciding to put someone on antidepressants or referring them to a differnt kind of doctor. Either way she needs to be on some kind of meds. The procedure for having someone committed against their will is if there able to make reliable decisions on there own.

Yes!!!!! Get her to see a doctor tomorrow!! Do not committ her until anti-depressants are tried or if she acts out by saying she wil harm herself.

I've had several different doctors to prescribe antidepressants for me without referring me to a psychiatrist.

general practitioner can prescribe anti-depressants.
You may want to talk to your friends doctor.
I am not sure how it works in ill., but here in my small town. We were able to talk to my sister' family doctor and he talked to her therapist. together they were able to help my sister.
