there are many good reasons to put tapes on dvd
1. chapter skipping
2. no rewinding
3. no accidental erasing
4. probably outlast vhs tape a few decades
however I may advise after putting vhs tapes on dvd, if the tapes are important (wedding, birthdays, etc.) I stress hold on to those tapes, dont throw them away or tape over them. Cause even dvd-r can erase themselves over time, possibly, dvd hasnt been around too long for scientists to find out
anyways, you can buy a dvd home recorder yourself, they range anywhere from $99 and up. Walmart has some of the 100 dollar units, and maybe best buy or circuit city. dvd-r and dvd+r (they work the same, however one recorder may record to both or just one) only cost quarters at most each disc. Its as easy as pressing play on the vcr and record on the dvd recorder, after you hook both of them together.
you can also do it with a computer, a dvd burner, and a tv tuner pci card for your pc. You have to be a little pc savvy to use a pc to record.
notice:
store bought tapes will not record to dvd because of copyright protection (macrovision) so keep that in mind. There are devices out there to beat the protection, but will set you back 100 bucks.

The easiest way is to buy a video card(if you do not already have one) that has the yellow, white, and red openings. Then, connect your VCR to the video card. Open any program that can record from camcorders, even Windows Movie Maker 2 will do it. Press Play on the VCR and press Record in the program. Then, when you are done, choose the option in the program that is: "Save to CD".

There are components which have VCR/DVD recorder in one box.
You can also hook up a VCR to a capture card on your computer and then burn the DVD (assuming you have a DVD burner).
If you have DVD Burner installed the software that came with it should be sufficient.

It's worth the cost (a couple hundred bucks) to get a VCR/DVD machine with dubbing capability.
Just push a button and it copies.

why would you bother? The whole point of a DVD is to have higher picture/sound quality. If you transfer your tapes to DVDs, you'll be recording low-quality junk onto high-quality media. Waste of time and money.
