The "fell swoop" is the final chop of an axe to fell a large tree. Industry term, orginated with loggers in the great north woods. You chop and chop and chop, and then, with one fell swoop, crash, bang, you have a set of pine bookshelves.

This comment is derived from the hawk, or eagle predatory birds species dropping out of the sky and scooping up the mouse or rodent as it dinner. Therefore, "In one fell swoop" this predator finishes off its prey changing its life forever, or what was left of it...
