What did you plug in? Sounds like a short, or the device is on and draws a lot of amps. Make sure it is off.

did the device you plug in have a voltage regulator??? does it have a choice 110 to 220? some appliances (especially travel items) give this choice for when you travel overseas...for instance i have a travel iron that has a selector switch to adjust depending on the area i travel to (korea runs on 110..america runs 220)
i would not use the appliance that you plugged in again....
the other answers are very legitimate too....could be a short, bare wires or the appliance was turned on while you plugged it in....
have your outlet looked at too...could be something within the wall unit itself.
good luck

Sounds like a surge or a short in the device try using a surge protector. If it threw the breaker then something more serious is going on. Just be careful with that outlet so you dont have a fire.

You have a short some where. Are there any bare wires showing? If so, that is what caused it, but you should have an electrician check it out before your place burns down.
