Your friend has a dim bulb for a brain. He likes her, no man gives diamonds to "friends" unless they are GIRLFRIENDS!

Diamonds may be "forever," (according to the advertising, anyway), but they don't talk. She can't assume how the giver feels, because all she knows is that he was fond enough of her to give her a pretty necklace... a nice gesture, but not a declaration of love.

How many diamonds doesn't change the meaning. You can tell from gestures that someone is fond of you, but the only way to know what form that fondness takes is to ask, or for the other person to say it.

There's also a possibility that she suspects (though this isn't a given), and would prefer things not go beyond friendship. Since the necklace is a gesture that could be interpreted several ways, she's choosing to see it as a gesture of friendship. Or she doesn't want to look stupid by assuming more and being proven wrong. Or...

Your friend could end up bankrupt if he keeps trying to "say it with diamonds." If he really wants to know the answer (which he might like, or not), then he'll have to risk telling her how he feels - with words.

You asked a big one.

To be honest, it depends very much on the guy -> what he's used to, and his personality/beliefs.

If a guy is seriously wealthy, they *might* be used to giving small tokens of jewelry to friends and aquaintances, not just love interests.

Typically though...
Many guys can be very emo -yes I can say this because I'M a guy- and desperate for finding anyone to feel love for and be loved back. We're even big on thinking we have a crush on a friend if we're lonely enough.
Because guys are typically more physical than girls, a desperate guy will often try to purchase feelings with an impressive gift, showing off, etc.

Why is this a problem? Why is this "emo"?

There's nothing realistic to this approch, and it doesn't work in "getting the girl."

So while "yes," a typical guy giving a girl a diamond necklace on her birthday, any birthday, out of the blue tends to mean that he likes her, not *every* guy thinks diamonds mean love.

You give a girl jewelry because she already likes you and you appreciate her.

Just realize what the different kinds and styles mean to a girl.

Earrings: Depends on the girl. Some think them more meaningful than bracelets, others don't. Leans towards strong friends and should always have some kind of special meaning -personal symbols, favorite animals/jems, etc.
Bracelet: See Earrings. Typically less intimate than earings, special bracelets made from white gold, silver charm bracelets, etc. are very dear gifts. Plastic or similar can be fun exchanges between casual friends.
Diamonds: You're deeply cherished as friends/lovers, typically a very rare gift. Needs to be done with care otherwise it's just a rock on a string/ring.

If you're very wealthy on the other hand, there are a fair amount of women who've recieved $50,000 Rolexes as casual gifts between friends, and *will* actually go swimming with them on.

It all depends on the guy. Typically, a random diamond can be a very sad sign he needs a reality check.
You may not actually like a girl if you've never charmed them with conversation.

Has he known her for a long time? If so, then it just might be a friend thing. But he obviously cares for her, at least as a very close friend. Especially if he doesn't come by money easily, if you know what i mean. It probably would've REALLY ment something if in the card he had said something to the effect of 'I really like you' or had asked her when he gave it to her.

Yes, I would think that if he took the time and the money to buy a very nice gift that he definitely likes her.
