People who say there might be a short in the outlet are wrong: if that were the case, the outlet would have fried or popped the breaker, without having to have anything plugged in to it. The short is in the plug, the cord, or the equipment the cord connects to. Examine the plug and cord carefully for frayed wires, burnt or cracked insulation, etc. If that all looks OK, the problem is probably in the equipment.

appears like a surge or a short contained in the gadget attempt utilizing a surge protector. If it threw the breaker then something extra serious is going on. purely be careful with that outlet so that you dont have a hearth.

There is a short circuit inside the appliance that you are plugging into the wall..Whatever the thing that you are plugging into the wall either throw it away or get it fixed....

sounds like there is a short in the wiring,you should give more infro like what were you pluging in was it turned on or off when you pluged it in the outlet,a lot of factors can come into play.
