There are several answers to this question depending on the scope of your "why."
On the deepest level, it's because we aren't mobilized into active voting blocs in this country (we're barely even passive voting blocs.) As such our interests are attended to by our goverment only to a limited extent.
Moving up one, a previous commenter nailed it abut corporate influence on government.
This is common in many sectors of the economy- you could easily make this argument about computers and pharmaceuticals. The first was wholly privately funded and then handed off for profit without proper taxpayer reimbursement. The second is funded (mostly R and D) by our taxes to the tune of about 50% ( to make matters worse, we then turn around and pay again at extremely high prices.) I think it's a good case- the real question is which of these is the bigger sham.

Bad leadership my friend, bad leadership and they do what they want because we all let them do it. Everyone should put pressure and make them resign just like in the days of Truman, fight fight through democracy and through the laws and get the out of the seat and have them trialed sitting right next to saddam himself.
It's not the troops fault though, those guys do their job just like executives do their jobs whether it is to steal, put jobs at risks just because the CEO sad to do so.
Support the troops people, you don't know how motivated it is to go out there and do their job better when they know the whole country supports them. Don't go and turn your backs on them screw the news they are just negative bastards those guys are doing good jobs there and the news never show how many insurgents they take out in return they are just negative bastards

Good thinking.
So, the next time you have to call the police or fire department to respond to a problem at your house, you should repay everyone for the money they pay for such services.

well, if we want to stay in this country, i guess we have to pay some prices. it's kind of like the reason why we don't get to vote whether we start war or not even though it's OUR family who has to fight, OUR brothers and fathers.

I suggest that you stop making stupid assumptions and find out what our troops are really doing.

Because our government represents corporate interests, more than it represents citizens' interests. It needs reform ... oh, and please enter this statement into the "understatement of the year" contest.
