I had it when I was in high school. I was too fatigued to even read for about two weeks - I just stared at the ceiling when I was awake, as I recall. I remember having a terribly sore throat, as well. My parents sent me back to school after those two weeks, although I probably shouldn't have been there. My singing voice was screwed for a few months after that - I remember my chorus teacher being really ticked off about the fall concert. I'm old, so this was back in the early 80s.
Supposedly you can only have it once, but that's not true. I've had it another couple of times, so I was officially diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome.
My daughter and roommate had mono a couple of years ago, and they would just phase in and out of consciousness for weeks. We turned the living room into a sick room. They'd literally drift right off during conversations. My roommate ended up having to go out of work on disability for a month, then was on half-time for another couple of months due to the fatigue. The roomie had a lot of abdominal pain around her spleen, and both of them had mildly sore throats, but not the horrible sandpaper throat that I recall.

Had it. Was out of school for 5 wks (had teachers come to my house) then only went 1/2 day the first week back. Had a fever some of the time, was VERY tired and had horrible headaches. Took 2 tests to come back positive. Miserable illness.

heh...mono...well you get really weak and it lasts for a while. Mine lasted for a week but sometimes people have it way longer. My friend has had it for a month already and she hasn't been in school. so yes it affects work and school. After i had mono and i was allowed back to school i wasn't allowed to play gym or do any sports cause i could rupsure my splien... and then get seriously sick.

I had it about 10 years ago. My throat hurt and I slept a lot. I was not able to go to school for about 3 or 4 weeks.

don't worry, mono is a self limiting illness..you will get well by itself in a few weeks after feeling sore and lethargic...some tips though..do not take ampicillin you may have a rash...do not engage in contact sports as you may have an enlarged spleen that may rupture...take soem rest..mono spreads by saliva, but most adults are infected and then become immune so you need not worry about spreading it to any one else as everyone has it....it will be over in 2-3 wks do not worry and it is not really horrid..just like flu..even lesser symptomatic

my roommate had mono last year, and she was able to go to class and work and everything, she was just pretty tired. i think hers lasted like a month and a half.
my other friend also had mono, and hers was so bad that she had to go home for the entire rest of the semester (we live in a college dorm).
i think it really depends...like it's not the same for everybody.

I had a serious case of it years ago. I though it was the flu and it would run it's course. I did end up in the hospital for a week but after some rest and medication, I was fine. I was jaundice so I can never donate blood though.

My husband had it, it seemed to last forever, was not detected until the end, he finally had a blood test. He was very tired, missed work, became slightly depressed. At his worse, we were on a trip to Az, I spent a lot of time int he pool alone. It was a fine vacation.
