A man interviewed for a position and received a very big promotion. One day after talking to him on the phone for an hour I told him that I was very happy for him that he received the promotion. He asked me why I was happy for him and I was caught off guard and said because I am. He seemed disappointed and it left me wondering if I said something wrong. I started thinking, why did he ask - Men, should I have said something more encouraging?

I already told him that I thought he was the best man for the job and he deserved the promotion....

Sounds kind if passive-aggressive to me. You tried to be nice, and now he has you wondering how you screwed up. Does he do other stuff like this or do you think maybe you two just crossed wires somehow this time?

Very odd question for him to ask: you don't specify your relationship, if any, with this gent. Perhaps he was hoping for a more intimate response. Any chance he's interested in you and was hoping you were proud of him, thus interested in him?
I would have been caught equally as off-guard as you were. Perhaps a follow-up conversation asking him how the job is going, is he happy he got the position, etc. might shed some light.

maybe he was looking for more material to blow the big fat bubble up more in his head and then didn't get it......lol no for real, nothing sounded wrong about what u said....Guess he was looking for more detail as to why you thought he deserved it. Hell he may even like you and thought he was going to hear more from you than what you said.

No it sounds like he was some how trying to rub it in that he got it and u didn't, so y should u be happy.
Your response should be that u r happy for him, that u believed he was a descent enuf person to of recived it, so it doesn't bother u.

I think when you told him you were happy for him he thought you had feelings for him, and maybe he thought he can get that out in the open because he got feelings for you too

He wanted an ego boost from you. He was hoping you would say something like, 'because you deserve it' or 'you earned it' or 'you worked hard for that'
men always need another ego boost. he probably wondered himself if he truely deserved it and honestly wanted to know WHAT specifically made him worthy of it.

You burst the ego ballon. You might have said that he DESERVED the promotion after all his hard work.

He's stupid. He's weird for asking u why you were happy for him. If you had said that you were NOT happy for him, then he could ask you why, but in this case he just seems crazy.
