To fix shots that are fat, try taking your stance with the grip of a wedge resting on your inside knee, (left knee if right handed, right knee if left handed), with the club head on the ground in front of you. (A triangle is made from your lower leg, the club shaft, and the ground). With the club resting in that position, practice swinging another club-the wedge should not fall from resting on your knee. This is also a good remedy for people that tend to slice. If that does not cure your problem, try moving the ball a bit forward in your stance and close your club face.
Many times when a person hits the ball fat it is because of one of three reasons:
a-they are trying to hit the ball very hard, causing their left heel to raise during the back swing, and lower during the the forward swing, (right heel if left handed), creating a digging motion with the inside shoulder.
b-they have the club face too far open
c-the ball is too far back in their stance

Hey, most of my FAT hits have been because I have changed the position of my back (spine) at some time during the swing. Most likely on the downswing. This is usually caused by an
unconscious attempt to help the ball down the line. If you will forget about the ball and concentrate on a good swing with both shoulders coming through the contact area, I be live you will get rid of the FAT hits.

First of all, never listen to what your friends say about your golf swings. If they knew anything worth telling you they would charge you for it and if they were decent players they would be making money doing that.
Second, I find that I hit the ball fat when I either lose a little concentration, swing to hard or try to help the ball in the air.
Try hitting balls with a 4 or 5 iron at about half-speed and concentrating on making good solid contact on the downswing with the ball first. That should help you reduce those 50 yards divot sbots.

I practice by putting a tee about 1 inch in front of the ball. The goal is to take out the tee after hitting the ball. It forces you to swing down on the ball and through. In a sense it forces you to flatten the swing and take the divot on the front side of the ball.

You might be releasing your wrists too soon on the downswing. Most high handicappers do this.
Concentrate on maintaining the cup in your right wrist until your hands reach waist height and then release the club as fast and as hard as you wish.
