Dear Dr ......
I would like to take the opportunty to thank you for the job shadowing experience.
This has solidified my resolve to pursue a career in Medicine. I found the time spent with you to be a valuable resourse. I intend to apply to various institutions to pursue this dream.
I can only hope that I will turn out to the kind of professional practitioner that you are with a great rapport with patients etc.
Thats how I would word it.

I am a doctor & understands what you are going into. I had my preceptorial with different doctors during my clerkship, internship & residency training. I am a Family & Occupational Medicine specialist.
Since it is a part of our training, we dont have to give something. However, in your case, probably you give him a card telling him how you appreciate everything you learned from him. You can probably give small tokens. There are some which says " The best doctor in the world." or probably bring him simple snacks or if you cook well, your specialty. If you are just a student, then a card will do. Once you get into medical school or once you graduate, you can probably invite him to your graduation celebration once you graduated from medicine & tell him he had been an inspiration for sometime.

What you just told us, in a letter would be apprciated but make it a personal letter not a professional letter. Professional thankyou letter is close to being an oxymoron. Follow it up with a personal thank you the next time you see him. If he inspired you to work harder in school enclosing a photocopy of a test you ace would be a nice touch.

I would write:
Dear Doctor (Name):
I want to thank you for all that you have done for me. The "shadowing" I did made me realize that I, too, want to be a doctor. Thank you doesn't sound adequate enough to express my feelings, but I am most sincere in saying so.
You have opened my eyes to the medical field and because you have been so instrumental in this decision, I want you to know that you will be my role model throughout my career.
Your patients are so fortunate to have you as their physician. I am also fortunate to have had the opportunity of meeting you because you have changed the direction of my life.
Most sincerely,
(Your name)
Hope this helps you!

You already did. Read the notes to your question. There are enough points in it to write a very good thank you letter.
You are more talented than you give yourself credit for.
Your shadow isea is an excellent one. I should ghave thought of that years ago.
Best of luck in your medical studies and future health career.
Doc. Dan.

A short simple note would suffice.
Also, be sure to use your SPELL-CHECK and NO SLANG. It looks more professional if done correctly.
A misspelled letter from a student/doctor would imply that he would leave a surgical sponge (or something) inside a patient.
Good luck!

Physicians are busy and have to read tons of stuff. A brief hand written note would be a nice refreshing touch. Simply thank him for allowing you to spend time watching what he does and that it inspired you to seriously consider becoming a Physician. Less is better.

i don't know that a "professional thank you letter" is the way to go...
i think i would probably send a thank you card with a handwritten message...and i would simply say what you wrote above...that you are grateful for his time, that he really helped you figure out what you want to do in the future.....

look, no offense..but do you really think a doctor of any importance is gonna take around someone..? and, then accept, and read a thank you letter? umm hello
most drs. have way too many patients and are way too busy for someone who thinks they are important enough to write a letter to a dr. and think he is actually going to read it..
best wishes

You could send a nice fall flower arrangement and brief note for his desk and he will definitely remember you meant business. He could also later on vouch for your enthusiasm for the time you shadowed. Make a long lasting impression.
