As a girl if you want to get attention from a guy, there are many efficient and fundamental ways to do so. Let's assume that you do not know very well the guy but would like to know him better or to date him. The most common ways to get his attention:
Smiling politely at him; make sure that he sees it.
Say "HI" to him whenever you see him in the hallway; a little hand wave is great as well.
Try to share common interests. If he loves sports, perhaps join him in the same activity.
Talk to one of his friend to learn more about him or to send the message.
Send him a card on Valentine's Day.

Be your lovely self, and if he's the right one it will happen naturally, but never be something your not, all that acting is tiring, and down the track he will discover he loves the fake you not the real you. A sweet smile, will do the trick

Be yourself will be not the best answer for it because I've tried that seven times and failed horrendously. You must learn to adjust with their needs and not act like you desperately need them. Tease sometimes. It works well.
