i bought a speaker set for good deal
but no receiver...
first, what is a receiver?
are there receivers that already has CD/Tape stuff intact,
or do i have to go buy those separately?

for extra points!
***
the speakers that i bought have two wires; one black and one red...
is there any way i can turn those into conventional input/output
plugs? In other words, is there a way i can make the end of the two wires look like that of a conventional head/earphones?

Okay...

A receiver is a device that allows you to control your system. It provides amplification for your speakers, switching between components, and offers a tuner for radio stations.

The speaker cables. The red wire is the positive ("+") connection and the black wire is the negative ("-") connection. The colors just help you decipher the different connections so you don't mix them up. You can have both colors the same as long as you know which one is which to be connected properly.

You can theoretically put a headphone jack to those wires but you probably won't get any sound. The problem is in the wattage. Headphone/earphones don't need much power. Large speakers need lots of power. If you were to plug you large speakers into an ipod, your ipod won't have enough electricity to move the speakers. What you want to do is get an amplifier. It takes that signal and boosts it up to the power required to power large speakers. A "receiver" is a common term for amplifier. Generally, receivers have am/fm tuners built in but that's it. You'll need to build a component system, buy a separate tape deck, cd player etc... and plug all those things into the amplifier/receiver. This, of course, will cost a whole pile of money. You may be better off selling those speakers and buying an all-in-one boombox.

my daughter did the same thing. the receiver is the thing that takes in the sound and puts it out. back in my day, you use to be able to get one that has the tape deck on it. don't know about today. and don't know of any that have a cd player on it. do know that circuit city sells receivers.
and the red wire usually would be the hot wire so i wouldn't think so.
this is coming from my head, i've not researched it.

A receiver is the heart and soul of surround system, what is does it controls what you listen to,(CD, TV,VCR, DVD,radio or FM,etc.,it then accepts the signal from it's source,(CD, DVD, etc).and then amplifies that signal so you can listen that signal through your speakers. Without a receiver you really don't have surround sound. Your speakers would play but not very loud.
