Yes. I am a new teacher, and it bothers me that some of the teachers at my school have been there for 20+ years and don't know much about their subject area or new methods for teaching it. Teachers have to be recertified, but they do not always have to update courses in their subject area. Instead, they find ways of getting around it by taking workshops in technology or reading or something completely unrelated to their subject area. That being said, there is a significant shortage of teachers, and I'm sure there would bea mass revolt or a lot of teachers quitting if this was made to be a requirement.

I think we would all agree that teachers need to continue learning new skills, information, and technology to effectively teach young people. Currently, most teachers have to go to workshops and conferences of their choice to maintain their licenses.

The question is how to assess their mastery of the new material and then it's application in the classroom?

Should we regularly test teachers or better yet should we assess their effectiveness and success in the classroom?

My vote is for the latter -- we should assess their effectiveness in and success in the classroom. How often and by what measure is for the experts to determine. Testing for testing sake is a waste in my opinion.

Personally, being in the profession I was in, and having to maintain continuing education to keep my own certifications and constantly retest ..

YES -- just like with Financial Managers, Medical Personnel, and other professions, I DO think that Teachers should also have to re-test to maintain their certifications and teaching credentials -- especially since technology is driving so many parts of our lives, and affecting the subjects that we are presenting to our children.

Teachers must complete several hours of instruction not only in their discipline but in other areas such as technology every school year. At least in Texas, it is a requirement.

Absolutely, like any proffesion/occupation, you need to be kept updated with current trends and developments. Ilke any workplace, people can become stagnant and institutionalised. I wouldn't call it a test so much, More like, they should go through some apprailsal process with their boss to see that they have attended personal development programs/seminars etc.

Yes to the teachers testing.

And teachers shouldn't pass ANY child that can't pass their tests on their own.
