my dog doesn't swim unless we are swimming, and we dont swim in lakes THAT much. He does swim if its like shallow and it gets deep slowly. After winter is over and the ice is off the river he is scared to even put his paws in or get a drink! He is more freaked out at moving things like creek's or river's. We he does finally swim he LOVES it, he will just keep going forever! We have had him since he was about 3 months, could he have had a bad expirience or what is stopping him? he is great once he gets going. He is an Alaskan Husky. I would like to try taking him to a lake or something with another dog that does like swimming and get it to go and see what his reacton is.

You have to give them time and some dogs just have strange habits like that. It could be that he has a hard time telling if its water or something that he can walk on. Sometimes having another dog around isn't good because that other dog may feel more comfortable and get too excited and make you dog more nervous. I have three labs and when the youngest was about 6 months it looked like she couldn't swim but after a few weeks she got better, yeah imagine a lab that can't swim!

Find out from the breeder if it runs in his family line. If you start getting him a kiddy pool in the summer when it's real hot and put things that scare him in it then jump in and pretend to be scared, he will come in and protect you, his love will be greater than his fear. If you aren't comfortable with that, just do the pool and jump in it and play until he's too hot NOT to join you.
Once he's in, give him oodles of attention, like their is no other creature on earth, and he will get over his fear because you are lavishing so much love on him, he'll constantly go for that kind of treatment all the time, just make sure you start in summer when it is really hot!
Good luck and may you and your dog have many joyful wet years to come!

Sometimes dogs just don't trust themselves when it comes to being in the water, my aussie was scared of ponds/lakes/rivers. what we did was incorporated her favorite game (fetch) with the water, we started by just barely throwing the ball next to the water and as she got more comfortable getting it farther and farther into it. now she is confident that she can swim & have fun and loves the water.

As a Husky, he's probably more into skiing or snowboarding than swimming.
Please remember though, their hair can clog the vents in your hot-tub.
