people can receive this gift different ways..... it depends on what makes you comfortable.....many can have hands laid on them in prayer and receive...others need to be alone...and have privacy...if you pray for it you will have it.... you just have to just relax and receive the gift...

i tried many times in church to "get" it but it just made me nervous...so, i went into my bedroom, closed the door for privacy... and just opened my mouth and made any kind of sound - just in faith- i patiently continued this for about 45 minutes..when suddenly i felt words coming quickly that i had no control over... the words were first just a few... then there were more... then finally i was speaking conitnuously ...the words were flowing out.... i have been able to pray in tongues for hours at a time since then....

every person is different.. my mother..bless her heart... was given one word.... and she just said this one word for about a year....i do not remember if anything more came or not..she did not say....other people have gotten just a few words..the number of words is not important... the fact that you are free to express your heart is what matters....just pray and ask, and then open your mouth in trust.. in time .. the words will come..

any questions, feel free to contact me.

If you are struggling with this, then you are not supposed to have the gift of tongues. Paul reminds us that he would rather that we pick more useful gifts.
Tongues is actually a gift given to the Apostles by the Holy Spirit when they were at Antioch and there were so many people there who spoke different languages (tongues). The apostles were able to speak and understand all languages spoken to the large crowd. Since so many people understand so many different tongues (languages) now, there is really no need to speak in tongues. If you desire to speak in tongues, ask the Holy Spirit for the gift but also ask for an interpretor; otherwise you language will be like speaking to the wind. Some just speak in unknown languages to the Lord which is precious to Him.

Start asking to be filled, ask for it to come in and it will
You may have to get desperate,
it is a gift that Jesus gave his life for
2nd Chapter of Acts
You will speak in tongues, as the spirit gives the utterance, or you will see words in your mind you don't recognize, speak them!
This gift is given to all believers, it is called the comforter.
It is a prayer language to God that no-one can understand but God, no not even the devil!!
I like that part
The other nine gifts will follow in time, that is if you want them
tongues and interpretation is a gift of prophesy,
not to be confused with the gift of tongues
Go for it!!!
Don't let anything or anyone stop you!
You will never be the same again!
Love and so many prayers for you!!!

I am so excited to see someone wanting to have a deeper relationship with Jesus. The gift of tongues, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit is like turning up the gas on a pilot light.
read the 2nd chapter acts. Pray for the baptism of the holy spirit. If you have a friend or a pastor that will pray with you that will help.

the one thing that I realized while praying for my prayer language, was that I had to pray out loud. those little syllables where the start to my language and it grows as I continue to use it.

be blessed out loud in Jesus.

I think you need some bible study on Spiritual gifts before you get started.

The Apostle Paul told us to persue the other gifts first, not tongues. And by the way, there are a few gifts that are no longer necessary or used in the Church today, tongues being one of them.

Keep in mind that no where in the bible does it state that Jesus Christ spoke in tongues. Spiritual gifts are for the building up of the body of Christ, you don't desire a specific gift, you grow in the Lord and at some point you will realize your gift.

If you're a born again christian then it means you are probably up for anything. After you speak in tongues why don't you try crucifying yourself? Then walk on water, sacrifice a goat or two. Finally why don't you build an ark? I mean if you're going to perform tasks that appease your god, don't stick with the easy stuff. Show everyone how devout you REALLY are!!

Ask God to grant you that gift. But remember, Paul says the gift that you should seek after most diligently. He says that speaking in Tongues is not edifying to the church unless someone also interprets what you speak.

Tongues is a gift, that God has already given to you just start to do it and eventually you will get good at it.

The holy spirit doesn't speak in tongues, that's a trance state induced by saying things over and over, if you believed in peter pan and brought two or more in his name and went peter pan crazy, then you could also talk in tongues. God would not give you information you couldn't make sense of, or that was not trance induced

pray. however speaking in tongues is a grace, not something one can ask for - it's a God given gift and not something to be taken lightly. many people who truly have the gift are often plagued by the realities and challenges it brings.
