IF you don't have your spare tire in place, you can jack up the car and access the latch from the underside by going through the center access panel with a long handled screw driver. It's circular and held in place by a tab on the outside and a screw on the inside. Just bend the tab and then rotate the circular panel out of the way.
Good Luck!!!

Now this sounds rough though I did this several times before.
Get ahold of the best piece of the edge with some solid card,
and pull it with general winch. The steady force will finally buck
up to 4 or 8 times, there is the problem, the lever work is
rolled onto. That may need fixing, the springs do not last for
more than 30 years. HAHahhhaaaa.

mtvtoni has the right idea. But when you do get it open, there should be an adjusting screw in the part on the lid that inserts to the catch. Try adjusting it to make it fit more loose in the catch. Then use white lithium grease on all the moveable parts at the catch, and on the pin you adjusted.
