hahahah i love this question! mostly because I am always wondering the same thing. In that situation you could have just smiled and said to her "You know, I dont really know very much about celebrity gossip but I do know that....(insert a topic you like here). If you just dont want to talk to her at all you could simply say "Wow I never knew that. I guess I just dont really pay attention to those magazines. :) I probably should, since I'm kind fo out of it, but thats okay. I think I'm just going to sit here quietly and read my book. You can join me if you have a book, or maybe that magazine you were talking about.

"Hey - I'm sorry, but I'm really not a Hollywood kind of guy. Not really into that kind of stuff, either." You could then politely excuse yourself on the basis of a coffee/bathroom break...or even get back to work as to eliminate yourself from her story-telling fits! Best of luck!

Never say "Shut Up" that is just rude beyond words. Say " I am not really interested in those things" and move along. Some believe they are just being friendly by making small talk and really thats all it is.

I don't think there's a polite way to tell someone to shut their pie hole, unfortunately. I would just say, "I've got an appointment,"
or, "The maintenance man is at the door," or, "See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya."

Tell them that you just went through a divorce and begin to break down into feigned tears. They will feel horrible and embarrassed, and try to remove themselves from your emotional situation.

Let her babble for a few minutes and then just look up like you've been trying to concentrate on something else and say "Hu?".
