That would be Major General George Edward Pickett of Virginia. AND NO, they did NOT name the fence after him, or the line, or the sign. Those are all spelled with ONE "t". Anyway, he commanded a division of Virginians throughout the war and fought at the Battles of Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Five Forks, as well as many others. The grand old charge was called Pickett's Charge because it was mainly Pickett's division who performed the charge, with the exception of General Pettigrew's men, who I believe were South Carolinians.
