My dachshund is overweight, and everytime I take her to the vet, I have to hear how overweight dachshund are prone to back problems and I get depressed. I know I have to help her with her weight problem-but here's my dilemma. I want her to enjoy her food too, if she doesn't-she sneaks cat food. Right now I'm feeding her Nutro-Natural choice for Overweight dogs. She loves it. But she doesn't really seem to loose weight with it, but doesn't gain either. But when my vet had me put her on the low-cal Science Diet she actually gained weight because she would sneak any food she found anywhere, because she hated it. Help! I want my pooch to be happy and healthy.

I can suggest a Eukanuba lite, all natural dog food. Watch the recommended amounts for the normal size of your pet. Now, here is the best advice: EXERCISE HER! Honestly, that is the best way to reduce her weight. A couple of walks a day, along with a lite dogfood, and voila, a healthy, happy pet. Don't give in to her not eating. My vet says that dogs will pull that number, but after 3 days, they WILL eat. So, if she turns her nose up to the food, please don't give her something because she looks so cute and is starving. She is playing a game that she knows she will win! But, if she doesn't lose weight and get healthy, both of you lose. Be strong. For her and to keep her for a long, long time. Aah, them little rascals!

firstly get off the Science Diet - this food is highly over priced for its quality - they paid for vet endorsment - vets commonly recieve little or NO training on food brands and ingredients and if you check Science Diet ingredient list you will find some very bad ingredients... if your vet sells Science Diet then of course they are going to reccomend it....
I am going to assume you are in the USA.. if so going back to NUTRO may be the correct solution but a slightly reduced amount.. if you are in Canada.. try NUTRAM
you need to raise the cat food so the dog cannot get it. The dog likes it better becasue cat food has more meat in it.. (since cats are true carnivours)
remember when following feeding guidlines - go with the weight the dog SHOULD be rather than the weight the dog actually is...
like people - excercise will help!

I have a Boxer who tends to be overweight. I am faced with the problem that she also has a sensitive stomach so if I don't feed her twice a day she vomits from "doggie indigestion". My girlfriend is a breeder and she gave me the advice of giving my dog canned green beans for her PM meal. It's less calorie dense than the same amount of any dog food and still settles her stomach. Also I am considering getting her a dog friend to keep her active. You may try walking your little one more.

When my dog was over wieght my sister in law suggested Fit N Trim by Purina, because it had worked so well for thier dog. It's easy to find, most stores carry it so you won't have to go out of the way to find a pet store for some over priced brand when they all work the same anyway. Just be sure to follow the feeding suggestions on the back. I know it worked great for our dog too! Good luck!

First, cut the food ration by 1/4 and increase the exercise. If you feed your dog more than once a day, cut her down to a daily feed. Dachshunds love to go on walks (their nosey) and play fetch, indulge them.
Second, put the cat food up out of her reach.

If the dog is truly overweight, take her to the vet and they will give you a prescription food for weight loss. Hill's RX diets work wonders. Then it is YOUR job to be active in making sure the dog gets NO OTHER food!!!!!!!!! It should not be hard, it is a small dog....can't get on the counters!!!!!!!!
The vet is right....this is one breed that can suffer GREAT problems if overweight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
