I think that the gundog breeds are really beautiful and neat, and I'm thinking of getting one. I don't hunt and it would never be used for hunting, but I just generally like these dogs...spaniels, setters.... Does anyone own one? What kind? What are they like? Thanks for the info!

I have 3 German Shorthair Pointers and I have owned English Setters. Both of them are good gun dogs and eager to please but the German Shorthair is a better all around dog and more versatile. The English Setter was bred to "set" game (point) and he does it very well but the German Shorthair was bred to not only to point but to flush and retrieve on land and water. The English Setter needs more grooming than the German Shorthair depending upon wheather you get a Lewellen or Lavarack (hunting or show). The German Shorthair is more of a family dog where the English Setter prefers one person. The English Setter is more "showy" and "look at what I'm doing" while the German Shorthair is "this is my job and I must do it well."
My dogs were bred to hunt but since my husband passed away the only thing they hunt is a soft spot to lie down and they do it very well.

Been around walker hounds. Which by the way are a beautiful hunting dog with a great voice!!
Read up if you are to get a hunting breed! They do take care. They are hunters and peeps feel this is a set back when you have them as pets....Digging, there barking constantly, not good with all critters (or some of them). Running off, bull headed, energy levels are outrageous! Some of them are down right nasty if they get put in a house all day, etc...Read Read Read :0)

Might seem funny but about half of all hunters get a dog first, and then start hunting because of the dog. I would suppose I first shot a bird over a dog at the ripe ole age of five, that was 60 some years ago and I have been hunting over dogs ever since. From the experience,,, for a fact,,, there is no greater bond than that between a hunter and his dog.

I have been around alot of hunting breeds. While I like the look of the English Pointers and Irish Setters I really love the personality of the Vizslas. Really sweet dogs and not as high energy as most.

**********WHY NOT HUNT???????????*********

You'd be *WASTING* the BEST part of the Sporting breeds just to let em ROT away being a housepet!!! Besides the damage done when they DON'T get enough "work"!

You ever SEE how much they LOVE IT???? Selectively bred for HUNDREDS of years to DO THAT JOB!!!
Willing & beyond eager to RUN ALL DAY LONG!!!
