Pedigree and any other dog food you can buy at the grocery store is feeding your dog pure junk food with nothing but fillers and by-products. Even the food your vet recommends is junk. Feeding a good food you can go by the guidelines on the side of the bag, but the junk food a person feeds from the grocery store or vets office the guidelines are wrong. They are so full of crap that it takes more food to feed your dog. here is a chart for you and you decide if the food you are feeding is good or not.

How to grade your dog's food: Start with a grade of 100:
1) For every listing of "by-product" , subtract 10 points
2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat, meal or
fat) reference, subtract 10 points
3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points
4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points
5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (I.e. "ground brown rice", "brewers rice", "rice flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points
6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points
7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points
8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3points
9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points
10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points
11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points
12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points
13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog is not allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points
14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog is not allergic to beef), subtract 1 point
15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point>
Extra Credit:
1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points
2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points
3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points
4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points
5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points
6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points
7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points
8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points
9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points
10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point
11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point
12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein source, but "chicken" and "" as 2 different sources), add 1 point
13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point
14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point

I'm not sure what the question means but --- I fill a bowl with dogfood and 15 min to 1/2 hour later I pick it up. Most dogs won't overeat. If yours does, then start with the label suggestion for the amount and cut back gradually until your dog is at a proper weight.

Cudos for picking Pedigree. It's often called the Science Diet of Europe because its formula was developed based on research, not like the gimmick brands (often called premium) which use tricks like additives in too small an amount to be beneficial, using multiple grains to trick people into thinking meat is the main ingredient, false information like corn is bad, etc. There's a reason so many breeders use Pedigree. Because it's marketed in grocery stores instead of exclusive pet stores the price is much lower.

There are instructions on the bags / cans of Pedigree dog food that tell you exactly how much of the product your dog should be fed (based on body weight). We suggest that you feed your dog once or twice a day at the same time every day to help get the dog's digestive system on a regular "schedule".

Don't feed that junk food to your dog. Use a premium quality food, it'll cost a little more, but they'll need to eat less.

I have two small breed dogs and they eat Artemis Fresh Mix Small Breed dog food. http://www.artemiscompany.com. Here's what they have to say about the dietary needs of small breed dogs:

Small Breed Adult

Important Facts about Small Breed Puppies and Dogs - defined as dogs that weigh 1 to 20 pounds at maturity.

Small Breed is a scientifically formulated food that is made to meet the nutritional requirements of small breed puppies and dogs and takes into account their particular breed characteristics:

Small breed dogs and puppies have a very limited capacity to digest starch. Therefore, a diet consisting of low starch and high meat protein is crucial for them. Recognizing this special nutritional need, we have formulated Small Breed food with seven different sources of protein. In addition, we have utilized fresh fruits and vegetables to replace hard to digest grains, thus lowering the starch content. The proper nutritional balance helps puppies transition into healthy adults and enables adults to stay healthy.

Small breeds are known to be very finicky and often have poor eating habits. For that reason, we’ve formulated the Small Breed diet with palatability that is unsurpassed.

Small breed dogs will burn two times as many calories as a larger breed.
